It deals with many mature themes such as racial prejudice and children under the age of 10 may have difficulty understanding the basic premise of the story. Tomi must dig deep within himself to find the strength to hold his family together and children can learn from this book that there will be trials in life, but it is possible to overcome them.

Children ages 11 and up will enjoy reading this book. It was written to be read mainly by boys because of the large amount of action and some violence that is included in the book. The Bronze Arch takes the reader back to the time of the Romans and shows the fear and anger that many people felt towards them, but one man impresses the protagonist with teachings about Jesus and the way of peace. However, it is difficult to extinguish such a deep hatred.
