So what’s a parent to do? Funding is a problem. Teaching the state’s large immigrant population is a problem. The needs of students with special needs are an issue. And no one has a really great answer. But as a parent, there is something you can do. It’s a drastic measure that could affect the entire population of Orange County schools. But it is not an easy solution. In fact, many of the families in Orange County Schools will have serious problems making this move. But it is so important. Parents of Orange County Schools: I challenge you to turn off the television during the school week.

For the small percentage of you still reading, don’t throw the remote at the screen just yet. I know what I’m suggesting is a scary lifestyle change that many Orange County schools will never consider. But for your children’s academic and future success, please hear me out.

Television consumes energy. It doesn’t matter if your Orange County Schools students are seniors or kindergartners. When they watch TV they are not: interacting with friends and family, exercising, doing homework completely, or using their brains. When children watch TV: they get inappropriate messages from shows and commercials, they get into the habit of inactivity, they eat more junk food, and they tend to become more moody and restless. All of these factors are seen in poor performance and behavior in Orange County schools.

How Less TV Can Help Orange County Schools

Now I know that Governor Schwarzenegger is not about to pass any initiative that will help me rally families in Orange County schools to watch less television. In fact, you as a parent are the only person who can really make this meaningful change for your family. But why would you want to do that?

You are busy? Really, really tired? Most parents in Orange County schools feel overwhelmed and exhausted at the end of the day. Television can be a relaxing escape. But think for a moment about how busy your family is already with homework, dinner, and activities at the end of the day. What if television was no longer a factor? How would your family spend this time? Would children in Orange County schools go to bed earlier and sleep longer if they didn’t stay up so late watching TV? Would you have time to read them more? Walk together? Play a card game?

If you really want to see improvement in Orange County schools, I encourage you to try this with your family for a month. No television on school days. Aren’t your kids worth it?
