Career Clusters, A Bridge Between Education and Career Planning
Since the 1960s, Career Cluster Resources have been used as career planning and exploration tools in schools, learning communities, and organizations across the country. Career clusters is a system that matches educational and professional planning.
Step 1: Identification of areas of interest in the career cluster
Occupational clusters are groups of similar occupations and industries. When teachers, counselors, and parents work with teens, college students, and adults, the first step is to complete the career group assessment. The assessment identifies the highest career cluster areas. Professional assessments show rankings of teens, college students, and adults in one of the following 16 areas or interest groups:
1. Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources
2. Architecture and Construction
3. Arts, A/V Technology and Communication
4. Company, Management and Administration
5. Education and Training
6. Finances
7. Government and Public Administration
8. Health Sciences
9. Hospitality and Tourism
10. Human services
11. Information technologies
12. Law, Security and Public Safety
13. Manufacturing
14. Marketing, sales and service
15. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
16. Transport, Distribution and Logistics
Step 2: Explore professional groups and related careers
After identifying the highest career groups, teens, college students, and adults explore different careers and create education plans. Career cluster tools used in career planning and education include:

- High school curriculum
- Areas of interest and skills
- Pedestrian crossings
After completing a career cluster assessment, teens, college students, and adults look at websites, career models, brochures, pathways, and high school plans. One of the most unique comprehensive career cluster resources is the Louisiana Integrated Skills Assessment (LISA), an Internet program. LISA lets you explore career groups, careers, skills, training requirements and more. There are 3 steps in the LISA program:

STEP 3: Explore occupations within this career group
In Step 1, when you choose a career cluster, you will see a description of the cluster. When you select a race group in step 2, you will see different races. Finally, in step 3, you’ll see a wealth of information:

- Educational and training requirements
- Intersections eg ONET, DOT, GOE and other codes
- Abilities
- knowledge
- Abilities
- Duties
- Labor values
- Information on the labor market
Although LISA is a great program, in the classroom or workshop, you need printed materials. When using printed materials, the career model is the best place to start. The models provide excellent overviews that list cluster definitions, sample careers, pathways, knowledge and skills. Visual models show clusters of careers, cluster subgroups, and related careers. Models are an excellent way to introduce professional clusters.
For presentations, workshops and group discussions, career cluster brochures provide additional information. Adults and teenagers read about the different careers available in each career cluster. Teachers, counselors, and parents use the brochures to solidify potential career or educational decisions for adults and teens. The brochures cover topics such as:
- Definition of professional clusters
- Careers
- Professional itineraries
- Employment prospects
- Abilities
- Credentials
Teachers, counselors, and parents use career paths for more detailed information. Professional itineraries are subgroups or areas of concentration within professional clusters. Each itinerary contains race groups. Career groups have similar academic competencies, technical skills, educational requirements, and training requirements. Career pathways are curricula that describe required high school courses, postsecondary courses, and related careers. Career pathways are essential tools that teachers, guidance counselors, parents, and other adults use to provide advice on educational planning.
Several websites include high school curricula. These syllabi show required, elective, and suggested courses for each level. The school’s plans also match career groups with related careers, career paths, and postsecondary options. Teachers, counselors, and parents find these school plans guides for selecting appropriate high school courses for potential careers. Beyond high school, the Utah System of Higher Education has created a Senior College Guide. Parents, teachers, and counselors can use the guide to match college studies with certificate and degree programs.

For planning curriculum and educational programs, there are detailed knowledge and skills charts and cluster crossings. Knowledge and skills expand on the information that appears in the career cluster models. For each knowledge and skill area, there are performance elements and measurement criteria. Teachers, counselors, and parents use Career Cluster resources to successfully complete career and educational planning.
