Rise of the SSC Board – From a Simple Examination of Yore to the Cut Throat Competition of Today

There is no dearth of students who appear for their Maharashtra SSC (Secondary School Certificate) board every year. The exam has gained tremendously over the years, with parents leaving no stone unturned to help their children prepare for the SSC board exams. In fact, in the year 2010 itself there was a massive participation of more than sixteen lakh SSC students from Maharashtra who appeared for the SSC board exams. This included about nine lakh boys and seven lakh girls. The SSC syllabus over the years has seen many changes in the context of the chapters as well as the introduction of newer and current material for the students. This is done keeping in mind the contemporary era.

They are all well-packaged in terms of content, but again tend to have an outdated feel given the advances made in the fields of science, computing, and especially mathematics. Much is left to be desired for students who remain in the dark and ignorant of many modern things. Maharashtra Board SSC can be considered equivalent to General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in England. But where the English counterpart gets a leg up compared to the SSC Board is the fact that they keep updating their syllabus on a regular basis. It is the same with most other advanced countries in the world. Apart from this, the constant innovations in the use of computer technology are optimally used for the teaching of students.

Another area where the SSC Board lacks behind these other international education boards is the first-hand experiences to offer students. This in terms of more practical work for science, exposure to the latest developments in IT, audiovisuals and history and geography field trips, making students participate in dramas, plays. All these should be heavily inculcated as part of the SSC syllabus. This, in turn, would improve and add value to SSC results.

There should also be more emphasis on national subjects i.e. Hindi or even more specifically Sanskrit which is the oldest and best of languages. In turn, Sanskrit teachings not only boast a lot about students’ minds in terms of all subjects, but also offer them a whole new world to discover.

The Maharashtra SSC Board recently changed and introduced a revamped SSC syllabus to the students a few years back. But to give Maharashtra SSC Board its fair share of due. He has never been harsh with his students, while the curriculum has always been competent enough for them to gain maximum knowledge in a simplistic yet effective way. This has always been the specialty of Maharashtra SSC Board, be it Science, Mathematics, History, Geography, Civics, English, Hindi, Marathi or other VET subjects.
