Pros and Cons of iPods in School

It’s no news that iPods have a huge following and can be found literally everywhere. But is it okay to use it in the classroom? (Educators everywhere sigh collectively and shake their heads in disapproval.)

Obviously, students are more inclined (if not entirely) to allow iPods in school, while most educators unequivocally forbid them. Let’s see how it all stacks up and see for ourselves if our kids should or shouldn’t be wearing them to school.

Cons:

a. It bothers teachers that students are too distracted and can’t hear them while they are teaching in class.

b. Students may download pornography or inappropriate media and bring it to school, where other students may be affected.

c. iPods can be used as a cheating tool. Some teachers have heard from students who plan to download formulas for math exams and the like.

d. iPods can be a target for theft.

e. Some educators worry that students will become isolated and antisocial. Instead of tuning in to other people, they stay tuned in to themselves.

f. Students can be so engrossed in listening to music that they can completely disconnect from what is going on around them, causing unnecessary setbacks.

g. Students may be playing their music too loud and could be damaging their hearing.

Advantages:

a. Students find that listening to music calms them down and therefore improves their schoolwork.

b. It gives students something to do when there is downtime at school; or while riding the bus to or from school. (Watch a movie or educational video, maybe?)

c. Students are able to show their individuality by the type of music they listen to.

d. Students disagree that they will become antisocial; in fact, they think it’s a great way to connect with their peers, sharing their music with them (as there are two headphones to share with a friend).

e. iPods can be used to record lectures in class and listen to them when revising for exams. This is also favorable when the teacher speaks too fast; you can just rewind and listen again.

f. Educational are available podcasts that students can tune into and that can help them in their learning.

g. Students can install educational apps such as dictionaries, bibles and calculators, eliminating added bulk to their backpacks/lockers.

h. Audio lessons can be listened to before class, allowing students more time to work during class.

i. It might be more beneficial for teachers (who have been teaching the same lesson over and over) to record and podcast their lesson. That way they won’t miss including important points in their topic.

J. Recorded lessons can be shared with absent students.

k. Podcast lessons are much more accurate than revising from notes.
