## Looking At The Expansion of The Computer Training Industry

It started with a math problem. This problem started the challenge of more unique math problems. Humans were performing these complex mathematical problems using numerous methods. Then came the abacus: a simple instrument designed to help perform mathematical calculations. It could be said that this is the point where computer training began: the first teacher trained the first student on the operation of the abacus.

Many years later, other devices were built to aid in mathematical calculations, but the first “computer” – the abacus – remained in use. Through the use of electronics came the first modern computer. This first computer could fill a room. In fact, there are still quite a few from that era in use today: and they still fill a room. The function of the first computer was to calculate complex mathematical operations in less time than it would take a person to do the same.

Initially, computers were the forte of scientists and mathematicians. They were then used more widely making their way into universities and other institutions of higher learning. At universities and other institutions of higher education, there were students taking their first computer training classes. Eager students lined up in line after line to sign up for computer classes – many were turned away due to overcrowding.

As technology advanced, these supercomputers began to shrink in size. In fact, computers smaller than a flake of corn can now be found: they are rightly called microchips or minicomputers. Along with the reduction in the size of the computer came the decrease in the price of a computer. Eventually, computers became affordable enough for the average Joe to own one. Not only were they small and affordable, they were also portable (think notepad).

Naturally, with all these computers hitting the market, someone needed to know how to use them. Universities offered computer training courses, as did junior colleges and technical colleges. What was once considered just an intellectual pursuit has become commonplace. Secondary schools initially offered computer courses where basic computer and computer programming skills were taught. Then the computer found its way into high schools and elementary schools. It has gotten to the point where everyone who attends public school is exposed to one form or another of computer training.

It has reached the point where young school-age students have begun to acquire more knowledge than the older generation. In fact, they seemed to be consistently outperforming their elders in at least this specific area of expertise.

The older generation began to appreciate the need for computer training. Many were busy raising the younger generation. This generation found it difficult to take time to attend formal IT training in a classroom setting. Others, consumed by a full-time job, faced a similar dilemma. Computers were in the workplace and the highest paying jobs were offered to those with computer experience or absolute experience.

Companies, institutions and IT experts understood this and took advantage of it. Lack of computer training and/or lack of time created a niche. Computer training as an industry was born. Internet-based computer training courses are available to almost anyone who can surf the Internet. This really brought computers to everyone.

Given the above account, one cannot help but wonder what will be the next phase in the growth of computer education.
