3 Ways to Keep the Desire for Learning During the Summer of 2020

The 2020 pandemic has challenged you to reach new levels of creativity and flexibility for you and your family. Many school districts have had their teachers in Zoom virtual classrooms teaching your school age children 4-5 hours a day! Also, some parents homeschool their children to maintain a learning environment for their children.

Now that summer is here, how can you leverage familiarity with technology and combine it with the resources at your fingertips to keep your child’s thirst for knowledge alive over the summer? Here are 3 simple strategies to create a fun adventure for your family:

1. Involve your child (or teen) in the “virtual vacation planning” process. This is essential for them to buy into the idea and maintain interest. I recommend creating a short list of destinations. Then let them research and choose the ones that interest them.

Some of these virtual tours are so wonderful “they make you feel like you’re there.”

Where have you and your family wanted to go? This is your opportunity!

2) Ask your children to write in their journal about their virtual vacation. Encourage them to record the experiences they found fascinating. Ask them 1) what did they learn from each place they visited and 2) what did they like best about each place? If your child is too young to write, ask them both questions and write down their answers.

(Ask your older children to write down any questions or observations they would like to explore when they visit the destination in real life.)

3) Then have a picnic in your backyard with some of the food you and your kids cooked in honor of your visit. Preparing special dishes for your family to enjoy, as well as new dishes from your virtual vacation. Using new and old family recipes, your kids will read and measure ingredients, which will help them in both math and science.

I remember fondly cooking meals with my mother and grandmother. With my mom, we made pecan and pumpkin pies, and blintzes. My grandmother Mary, educated me in the art of creating Hungarian cuisine for stews, roasts and side dishes. It all started with cooking the sauces for 3-4 hours with the stewed meat and adding the Hungarian spices. The stews and roasts were delicious and the cakes were delicious. Many years later I gave concerts in Hungary at their Liszt Music Academy and ate in fabulous restaurants with my husband while listening to Robby Lakatos, gypsy violinist.

*At your picnic Have each person read their answers to their two questions. Ask your younger children to answer both questions and, if necessary, silently remind them of what they said earlier when you wrote to them. You want to start your children’s creative learning and thinking process.

* Spend some time reading as a family every night. Get your child or teen involved by asking for their input in selecting an adventure story they would like to read as a family. Parents begin reading with excitement and joy using different voices for each character. Then get your older kids to read and do it too! Then talk about the story you read together by asking your children questions to guide their thinking process.
