How To Homeschool My Child The Best Way (Part 2)
In my recent article on how to homeschool my child, I talked about the first secret I usually share with homeschoolers. Students at the school must establish a foundation that matches their faith and beliefs. In this article, I will discuss the importance of using books, true classics, in all subject areas. Life books with a real message are the best way to homeschool your children.
Secret #2: Books
My kids laugh about it.
i love to read
I love literature.
I love books.
So I want to use books more than textbooks. If there is a good book for teaching a particular subject, I encourage you to use it instead of a textbook.
I was a public school teacher for 6 years and always dreamed of having books in class that we could read and discuss together. A class book set costs money and I never got those class book sets.
In the beginning of homeschooling my children, good books were very important to me.
We started homeschooling at elementary school age, around 3rd and 5th grade. So we started reading some of the great classics at that age. I enjoyed reading children’s literature because I didn’t read all those books growing up. I wasn’t even a reader growing up.
I have now become an avid reader. In fact, my family makes fun of me when we go on vacation and I’m packing. Steve looks at me and says, “You take it all.”
I reply, “Last year we were away for 2 weeks and I read 4 books. I should have enough to keep me going.”
I didn’t want to go to a bookstore and buy new ones. Last year we went to Costa Rica, and I wasn’t going to buy anything in Spanish anyway. Books are great.
In homeschooling, we try to focus all of our language arts on books. All of our history, government, and even some science and math are centered around books.
You might be saying to yourself, “He uses regular books to teach math.”
“Yes, I have!”
When I discovered Sir Cumference and the Round Table, I thought it was the coolest story. What’s so good about it? It teaches a math concept through a story about a knight, his damsel, and his young son. You probably think that you could only use textbooks to teach math. Not necessarily! You can use real storybooks to teach math concepts like geometry, the Pigathorean theorem, or circle concepts.
Beyond math, you should read literature and history books with your child. This includes read-aloud time and individual reading at your child’s reading level. As you read books with your children, be sure to write and talk about what you are reading. I will cover this in a future article.
