Homeschool High School – Should Homeschool Students Show Their Work?
What are you angry about today? I remember being conflicted specifically about “showing your work” in math. How do you know exactly when it’s important? And when is it not important at all?
Some will say “always show your work” and others “why show your work anyway?” I think we should take a step back and think about it from another perspective. It is not your job to make your child show their work or not. Your job is to make sure the student learns. Some children will learn best by showing all their work, and others find the work too repetitive or boring, so giving an oral response makes sense (as we did with elementary-level math). Therefore, perhaps our best strategy is to have the student show as many responses as are necessary to learn.
That’s all well and good, but here’s what you can do specifically. If the student shows all their work and gets 90% or more on homework, then they are learning math and have learned how to show work. Maybe for the rest of the week they can show their work on just two or three problems. The other problems can simply correct the answer. If they score less than 90% on this assignment, they will have to show all the work again the next day. This will give them an incentive to get the answers right. It will help them learn how to show work, but it will also show them that learning is more important.
If the answers don’t match the answer key, don’t assume your child made a mistake. I have been proven wrong MANY times! Math book answer keys are notorious for getting the answers wrong, in EVERY math curriculum. Try locating the publisher’s website for updates on their answer key or fixes. They may have a list posted. Make use of their 800 number and call them if you have any questions.
Again, this is all well and good, but how do you manage this in real life? When my kid’s answer didn’t match the answer on the answer key, I had *them* call the company and get the explanation (most of the time, anyway). I was so busy with everything else, I just didn’t have time, so I told the kids that it would be marked as incorrect unless they called the textbook company and approved that the answer key was incorrect. The only exceptions were when they convinced my husband to help them 🙂
If the student’s answer is correct, but they found a different way to get the answer, that’s okay. It is important to know that there are options for getting the answer. I would only worry when the answer is wrong.
