The Last Teacher Standing

In ancient times, teachers were gods. They were next to the white colonial masters in order of ranking. They were respected and valued. They were seen as people sent by God to remove ignorance from the earth in place of the fortunes and good news of life. An ancient community would never make a decision if the teacher is absent, because his input is crucial to the decision of the elders.

The master in the old days never suffered anything. He was robust and well fed. It barely touched his salary except when he needed it to buy a car or build a house. Their accommodation and food were taken care of by the community. Their washing and cleaning of the house were exclusively the preserve of the students. They represented the community at government and other meetings. Masters used to be on the side of kings.

But its counterpart in modern times is easily recognized when cornered. He moves in torn clothes. His shoes are worn out. He is so thin and dry that his pants occasionally fall off his buttocks. When wearing a tie, there is always a large gap between the collar and the shirt collar. He is always hungry and therefore always angry. Sometimes out of anger, he dirtyes a student and the next day, the boy’s father comes to school to harass him.

He does not dare to present himself to important people as a teacher if he wants recognition: he rather prefers a more polished phrase – Education Consultant. Since his salary is too meager to sustain him for the month, he resorts to extorting money from students on one excuse or another. Sometimes he engages in GCE “expo” business to make ends meet.

Some of the students even call him different names and he happily responds. No one recognizes him when he attends a community function. He has a hard time finding a lady of his choice because no girl wants a teacher for a date. He does not dare to attend a political meeting if his pocket is not fat enough, otherwise he will not be recognized. Your contribution without cash to back it up will not be welcome, regardless of your education and wealth of experience.

Every student wants to be taught by him, but no student wants to be in his profession. Every parent needs their son or daughter to be taught, but no parent wants their son or daughter to teach for a living. Love him or hate him, the teacher is perhaps the last bastion of moral rectitude in a culture that seems determined to elude that very possibility. The situation of the current teacher is unfortunate.

Teacher pay has always been at the forefront of the national discourse. Poor remuneration, which does not reflect the harsh economic environment, has often led to strike action by members of the teaching profession at almost all levels of education in Nigeria. Primary and secondary school teachers in most states of the federation have had bones to pick at different times with the supervisory authorities. It has become almost unimaginable to imagine an entire academic session without a score due to the industrial actions of teachers at all educational levels in the country. A teacher’s base salary is so abysmal; he/she has to reinforce the same by finding a small-scale business at the same time as reporting in class, just to make ends meet.

It is not uncommon to find a science lab in a typical high school on grounds almost devoid of the most basic equipment. Private high schools seem to fare better, but most also do poorly when it comes to stocking learning environments with the tools needed to facilitate teacher and student learning. Most of the students graduating from secondary school in science, especially in rural communities in Nigeria, only know what a beaker or conical flask is on the day of the Chemistry practical exam. The experiments described by ‘Abbot’ and PN Okeke in their Physics texts sound so surreal to them and their teachers. The teacher, faced with these limitations when it comes to transferring knowledge to their classroom, is still expected to do the same by parents and principals or risk being labeled as not good enough and fired. Unfortunately, the books stored in most school libraries belong to the stone age.

Teachers are also on the receiving end of neighborhood or student violence and examples abound. Students who want better grades even if they don’t deserve them have often put the teacher in danger. Male students in our ivory towers have often used the instrumentation of cult groups to harass teachers at will. I remember an incident where one of my teachers in high school was beaten up in a dark alley while walking home from a grocery store. A few days later, two students who never attended class and who had often failed math exams, were found guilty of the attack and subsequently expelled. Stories abound of teachers who have had to endure violence from students, including the transference of it to members of their families.

Those who cast teachers as bribe-takers and custodians of moral bankruptcy in our institutions of higher learning must first look at the other side of the coin: the labors a teacher must endure to do his or her job. work; a job he likes but society doesn’t seem to care about. The teacher is responsible for the achievements of the men and women who are engaged in all sectors of our national life. The teacher goes through the rigors of meticulously collecting his materials all night before arriving at class, having barely slept. Yes, he does receive a salary, but that salary is a drop in the ocean when juxtaposed with the jumbo salaries and bonuses that are sent our elected politicians’ way at every turn. Yes, the teacher is far from perfect and should sometimes be given some slack for underperforming, but if ever there was a job that should be considered (to borrow from Julius Caesar) the noblest of all, should be the good. teaching profession!

With the dangers associated with their work, it’s a wonder there are still men and women for whom teaching remains a passion and not just a job. These are the last teachers standing, choosing to look past the dangers and trials of the job, but to focus entirely on it. Neither the society, the environment nor the errant and recalcitrant students encourage them. If these teachers are not helped and encouraged, soon, and I mean soon, there may not be any teachers standing. Every day, these men and women are shaping the world around us in various classrooms across the country, as we pound away at the keyboards of our laptops in offices, entrusting the mental and physical development of our children to the teacher — – the last man in a world where few are worth the names of the professions they exercise.
