10 Writing and Assessment Prompts For Students – From Aphorism to Assignment
Learning, learning and more learning. Writing and learning. Writing through the curriculum. As a teacher, you know how learning and writing are connected. And trying to come up with new ideas so that you have a variety of interesting ways to engage your students in writing to reinforce their learning and to show you what they’ve learned is a challenge. This article includes 10 prompts that may be new to you (and each includes a definition, if needed, and one or more sample request expansions):
1. Aphorism (a short, concise statement of a principle; usually instructive)
- Write one or more short aphorisms that contain some important truths learned so far this year.
- Write our laboratory safety rules as aphorisms.
- Look up some Spanish aphorisms and then determine if there are equivalents in English (or vice versa).
- Write an aphorism for writing your first computer program.
2. Apologist (a short moral story, which may have animal characters; allegory)
- Write an apology for someone who is reading The origin of species for the first time.
- Write an apology describing what the color mix was like. For example, 2 little skunks were approaching a picnic. Red, yellow, and blue foods splashed in all directions, combining to form secondary colors, and so on.
- Compare and contrast an allegory with an apologetic.
- Write an apology to God for damaging the environment.
- Design a greeting card to say you’re sorry.
- Choose an “attitude”, for example, serious, humorous, sarcastic or any of the other attitudes. Write an apology showing your understanding of this attitude.
- Juliet and Romeo write an apology to their parents explaining their actions.
- Higgins writes an apology to Eliza about how he treats her like a thing.
- Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper asking prospective parents to take an interest in their children’s science projects. Be real and engaging at the same time.
- Appeal to a current event, a situation in a novel, for example To kill a nightingalethe innocence of Atticus or the school theme.
- Why are you drawn to the vocational arts? Justify your reasons.
- Write a letter to your manager asking for an extension of time for your software development project.
- Using your knowledge of probability and statistics, apply it to the following activity: Interview 30 people and find out their birth months. Write your findings.
- Write about the process you went through to determine the probability that 3 people have the same birth month.
- Create and write applications for the jobs you’re interested in, including required skills and requirements.
- Write an article describing a UFO sighting.
- Write an article about school sporting events, include pictures, etc.
- Write an article after interviewing (hypothetically) one of the main characters of the novel we are reading (or a historical figure, politician, etc.)
7. Ascription (attribution; to assign a particular quality or characteristic to a person or thing)
- What characteristic or attribute would you most like to be attributed to you? Because?
- What characteristic or attribute would you like to be attributed less of? Because?
- What object would Karl Rove be likened to (and why?) or stand in for any other current political figure.
8. Assembly instructions
- Give instructions on how to build a country. Be as specific as possible.
- Choose a specific assembly process and type the specific order and sequence of the process.
- Write instructions on “How to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich” (or any other common practice). Give them to someone else to fill in as WRITTEN and observe the results.
- What does the verb tense, formal/informal, say about the speaker or the speaker’s intention?
- “I have the right to enjoy math and ask questions without being made to feel stupid.” What other statements would you like to make about this or any of your other classes?
- Create an assignment for someone who wants to learn how to write a business letter.
- Write an assignment for your teacher. Be creative!
