5 Facts About Procrastination

procrastination What is?

Procrastination is basically when a person decides to put off a task to do it later. It’s normal for people to procrastinate from time to time, when you can’t help it. However, it will prove to get you into trouble if you start procrastinating too many times, especially when you don’t need to.

Why do we procrastinate?

Here are 5 reasons I’ve found why some people procrastinate. Mainly related to school life.

1. Fear of failure

Some people, myself included, choose to procrastinate out of fear of failure. We are too afraid to discover one day that our effort to produce a work would prove futile. But then, if we never tried, how would we know if our effort has paid off or not, right? Exactly! This fear, which continues to linger in our minds, will not improve anything, it might if we use it as a prudent way of handling work. However, it can usually make us work even less and this is where procrastination comes into play. We leave our work to the last minute and rush things, ignoring the details and important parts that would add those extra notes we would potentially have to our work.

Be wise, be brave. Remember that failure is part of life, we must embrace it, learn from it!

2. Perfectionism

perfectionism A very good attitude to work that requires orderly and detailed attention. However, when people try to be “too perfect,” they tend to spend too much time on a particular task that leaves other tasks “untouched.” This unbalances the amount of work done. For example, if a student focuses too much on arts and forgets about other subjects like math and science, he will find himself struggling in math and science in the near future.

Remember: life is full of imperfections. Of course, you can give your best to achieve the best possible. But, not everything has to be perfect to produce the best. Sometimes imperfection is better than perfection.

3. Confusion and self-doubt

People are often not stuck with the task at hand, they are stuck with how to start the task. For example, writing a story for English. They know what the plot of the story is, they just don’t know how to start it. Sometimes, they think their words aren’t right and they’re just not good enough. This then puts them off task and the word “give up” would come up in themselves.

have confidence Think about the different ways you can start a task and choose which one you think is best. Don’t spend so much time on how to get started that you spend less time on the main content.

4. Little motivation

In everything we do, motivation is one of the most important factors that can affect the quality and pace of your work. If you’re motivated, it technically doesn’t make sense to do something. It’s like being a salesperson. If you go to people’s houses, with no enthusiasm to sell, you’re practically telling your customers that your product sucks and isn’t worth their time and money. But, if you go to them with a big smile on your face, with confidence and motivation, you’re showing that you’re sure they’ll like your product and that it’s worth their time and money. It’s the same concept with motivation: when you have poor or low motivation, you will put in less effort and produce lower quality work. On the other hand, if you are highly motivated, you will want to work harder and you will want to produce the best result you can.

No matter how tired you are, think about the benefit of doing the work, or it would be to get straight A*s or to impress your mother. Your hard work will always pay off.

5. Lack of priorities

People, especially students, often have little sense of priorities. They can’t decide which tasks are more important. Some choose to start with the difficult tasks first and then focus on the easier ones. Personally, I’d recommend starting with the easy stuff first, as you’ll be happier with your progress and more likely to stick with the work. The way I see it, people can usually get so discouraged by difficult tasks that they give up completely to do other equally important tasks and jobs.

Make a list of what needs to be done, decide which are the most important. If you can’t decide, just organize your time so that all the works that need to be done have a reasonable amount of time for you to focus on each one.
