Throw an "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader" Party

Looking for a great party idea? Invite guests to your own interpretation of the hit show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.” Test your knowledge, or lack thereof, of elementary school facts. Just like the hit game show, adults will find themselves in disbelief at how much they’ve forgotten since elementary school. You’re sure to make the “honor letter” when you throw this A+ party for your friends.

Create the atmosphere

Set up your classroom:

·Create a chalkboard (or use a real one) at the front of the classroom to serve as a game board (Print up to six topics on the chalkboard: First Grade Math, Third Grade Social Studies, Fifth Grade Earth Science etc. and ask several easy questions for each.)

·Decorate a “teacher’s desk” with the chalkboard font (Place the following on the desk… an apple, a stack of books, a pencil cup full of sharpened pencils, a globe, a pencil , a jar of candy, etc. .)

·Have two student desks in front of the board…one for the student helper and one for the contestant

Decoration for children of 8 years

Tie red helium balloons to bright red apples and place them all over the party room

Hang elementary school poster cutouts on the walls (found at teacher supply stores)

Stack shoe boxes at the party entrance to serve as cubbies for guest to store their belongings

Hang a large map on the wall

Place an American flag in the corner of the room

Use old-fashioned lunch boxes as centerpieces on tables

Print guests’ names on wooden rulers and use as place markers on the tables

Before the party, find two or three elementary students to serve as student helpers. Make sure they are aware of how the game works. Let them know that they will be asked to answer elementary questions. (Plan to play the game at the beginning of the party, so the youngsters can escape early.) Also, choose a friend (if not yourself) to play the role of game show host or teacher. Make sure the host is familiar with the game setting.

Explain the rules of the game and ask if anyone thinks they are “smarter than a fifth grader.” Pick a fun-loving and willing contestant and start laughing. After the first contestant finishes, or graduates, they pick someone else and play another round.

Make it more fun

Create fake money (customized with details about the party) to reward the winning contestants. Record game show music on TV and play it during the party. Serve sack lunches: Pack each guest a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bag of chips, and a small dessert in a paper sack lunch. Fold the top over and print guests’ names on the bags with a magic marker. Place the sack lunches in the middle of the dining table and surround them with plenty of finger food. Fill the fridges with juice boxes and milk cartons and of course have a second fridge full of beer and bottled water.

For a fun twist, ask guests to come to the party dressed as elementary school students or teachers. Set up an elementary school “picture day” backdrop and take digital photos of the guests. Print the pictures and send them home in manila envelopes.

Ask guests to bring a photo of themselves (if they can find one) and have a “guess the elementary school student” game during the party.

Order personalized pencils and notepads to take home. Pack them in ziplock bags or small school supply boxes along with glue sticks, fruit cups, large lollipops and Twinkies.
