Liberal Arts – A New Dimension Towards Career Opportunities
According to reality, we often opt for the same professions, which had been adopted by our parents. We try to adopt this career that is in demand and offers opportunities in terms of job prospects. We try to focus on the influential fields, which our friends have studied or opted for so far, and this leads to the growth of narrow thinking, deception and wrongdoing. The doctor, the accountant, the computer engineer, the businessman, etc. they are certainly reputable careers in recent decades, but the growth and demand for new dimensional careers are much more superior, ethical and claimed worldwide to offer better opportunities in the decades to come. Have we ever looked into the multi-dimensional career field as liberal arts in the modern era, which will be more demanding in the future?
Liberal arts means open mind, free thinking, creativity etc. Teaching, law, art, music, photography, architecture, drama, social work, philosophy, media studies, sociology and many more are part of the liberal arts.
First world countries have been focusing on liberal arts for many decades, but in our country people are opting for the same fashionable careers, even though they know that the growth of the old careers has slowed down.
We have never focused on preserving our history, culture and showing our creativity, opting for Liberal Arts subjects in our undergraduate and master’s studies, because in recent decades,
Bachelor of Arts was definitely the horrible choice for both male and female in Pakistan in the past due to narrow mindedness and lack of opportunities; but now the new generation must seek this new innovative and liberal field of art.
Liberal Art has a 360º dimensional form to keep looking for unlimited professional opportunities in the future.
In this article, I would like to focus on one of the liberal arts fields, which is architecture.
“Architecture is based on science, but its heart is in the arts”
Because their designs must respond to social, cultural and environmental problems, using the rich potential of science and technology to achieve quality in the design of spaces, shapes and details.
Architecture is known as “The Professional Creative Problem Solver in this Modern Era”. You will learn to work with others to imagine and design buildings, from the smallest to the tallest; you will solve problems, make drawings, build models and fine-tune it at your level of study.
An architect could also learn to design, build, draft, research and site plan.
If you like building models; Draw blueprints of your building ideas; Research and write articles; learn math; learn about conserving and restoring old buildings; Study architectural styles and history; Think about how buildings affect individuals and society, then you would have a bright future in this field of creativity.
If you are absolutely captivated by buildings; If you like to be creative; if you can handle (handle learning from) public criticism; if you are self-motivated and well organized; If you enjoy taking on new challenges, you should consider a degree in Architecture.
The following skills and knowledge are required to be a successful architect
· Must have a solid background in Physics and Mathematics.
· Must be a good designer.
· Must be creative.
· Must have analytical and problem solving skills.
· Must have aesthetic sensibility and a demanding imagination.

Ideal candidates in architecture should have 12th standard especially (Pre-Engineering), or ‘A’ levels with the following subjects:
English: essential to communicate ideas and thought processes clearly.
MATHEMATICS: Essential requirement as mathematical techniques may be required to handle complex statistical data.
PHYSICS: Indispensable as it allows a clearer understanding of the physical environment, within which the architect designs.
COMPUTER SCIENCE: It is good that you have computer studies as an elective subject or basic computer training. You will spend most of your study time doing hands-on activities in the design studio, including drafting, layout and computer-aided design (CAD).
It takes 6-7 years of intensive training to complete your undergraduate and postgraduate degree in architecture from most institutions in Pakistan and around the world.
5 years degree.
1 year master’s degree
1-2 years of PhD
Uet (Lahore) and international universities also offer 3-year Diploma in Architecture.
From where can I pursue my degree?
There are 5 institutes, which are registered with PCTATP (Council of Architects and Town Planners of Pakistan)
1. University of Karachi.
2. Indus Valley School of Arts.
3. Dawood Engineering College Karachi.
