Where Can I Go to Find College Grants?

Grant money for university costs is awarded by companies, the government and private and charitable organisations. Not only is it a kind gesture to help a young student with college costs, but in many cases it is a wise investment for the future. Helping those with specific talents, interests and needs is betting on the future, and that’s what successful organizations do! So helping you succeed in college is in the best interests of many people, whether you know it or not.

How do I qualify for a college scholarship?

There are college scholarships for everything. If you enjoy underwater basket weaving, you may even find a grant to guide you. There are grants for sports, business and creative activities. Your race, your height, your home state and even your hair color can qualify you for a grant. Did you know there is even a scholarship for left-handed students?

Here are some of the more serious features that businesses, community groups, clubs, sports organizations, universities, non-profit organizations and government agencies may consider when awarding grants:

-Are you interested in IT, agriculture, arts, business, hospitality, music, photography, religion, African studies or science?

– Are you a minority, a woman, do you have a disability, are you a non-traditional student or do you have a serious illness?

– Are you planning to major in social work, nursing, law, cosmetology, medical school, teaching, engineering or a trade school?

If so, you may be on the radar of one or more benefactors who want to help you with your education.

Where can I go to find a university scholarship?

Start with a Google search. Enter something like “College Scholarships for Social Work Majors” or “College Scholarships for Agriculture Majors” or “Nursing Student Needs College Scholarship.” You’ll probably find some unexpected rocks to look under. But my favorite website is called the College Grant Database, run by a website manager who constantly updates the site as new grants become available. Do a Google search for “College Grant Database” and you will be directed to the site. The website administrator is Chloe Trogden. Not only will it provide a wealth of information, but it responds to personal messages on the site.

Remember, the most commonly awarded college grant is the federal government’s Pell Grant. It is primarily for children who show severe financial need. To fill out an online FAFSA application, simply Google “FAFSA online application” and you will be directed to the government’s website, where you can submit your application from the comfort of your home or computer lab from the bedroom

There are dozens of sites that will help you apply for grants and show you the world of grants. Here are three: Classes USA (the best online grants of 2012), Student-Grants.Education Grant, and Fastweb (a combination of personalized grants). Try your hand at an online match!

Find a scholarship/college scholarship match

There is a match waiting for you! It could be at the college you’ll be attending or offered by your state. You’ll want to request a full list of scholarships awarded by any college you’re considering applying to. From bowling to Jewish studies to studying in China, there are some pretty solid opportunities out there.

You should also check with your state, as there is a good chance that grants are available to residents of your state, based on financial need or special skills/interests. Call your governor’s office to begin this search.

Our best advice when searching for college scholarships is to be creative! Check out our page on specific college grant ideas and make a plan to look around to claim the grants you can. Your success depends more on your determination and persistence than anything else!

Grants from Uncle Sam

The most widely awarded grant is the federal government’s Pell Grant. You may qualify if you have severe financial need. You’ll need to provide your parents’ financial information on your application, so unless you’re close to the poverty line, don’t bother. After age 24, however, students living on their own can apply for and receive up to $5,500 a year in Pell Grants. To find out if you qualify for a Pell Grant, fill out an online FAFSA application.

Here are other grants offered by the federal government (remember, it’s free money!):

• The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (for Pell Grant recipients with extreme financial hardship; campus-based; $100-$4,000)

• Scholarships for Academic Competitiveness (for low-income college freshmen and sophomores with rigorous college regimens and a GPA of no less than 3.0; $750-$1,300)

• SMART National Scholarship (for low-income third- and fourth-year college students majoring in science and math; up to $4,000)

State subsidies

Several states offer grants for state residents, some based on financial need and others on specific skills and/or experience. Contact your state governor’s office to check for grants specific to your state.

Special Needs/Special Interests

If you have special needs, such as a disability or medical condition, or special interests, such as anthropology, journalism or music, you may be eligible for a scholarship. Here are some categories where I’ve seen grants offered: African Studies, Agriculture, Arts, Athletics, Business, IT/Tech, Hospitality, Media/Advertising, Non-Profit, Photography, Religion and Science. In other words, scholarships cover the broad universe of studies, affecting almost every student.

Don’t throw in the towel!

If you’ve applied for a grant or two without success, don’t give up. Finding grants is a numbers game, and as long as you’re willing to put in the time and effort to locate and apply for as many as you can, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts. If it means going to college for free, or almost free, isn’t it worth it?

And remember, even if you don’t come up with major grant money, you can still go to college. Student loans are an easy way to get money. There are many sites that allow you to search and find a student loan that fits your needs. One of my favorites is College Prep Ask It!, which has lists and links to loans, scholarships, and grants, not to mention a wealth of information for future college students!
