A Complete Overview of The IGCSE Exam Pattern
The IGCSE is extended as the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is a popular international certification for secondary school. It is also called O-Level or year 11 or fifth year in the respective schools and countries, before moving on to advanced levels such as sixth form or A-level or years 12 and 13 or even pre-university studies.
The IGCSE was formerly the University of CIE, Cambridge International Examinations, in 1988. In fact, since 1858, the University of Cambridge has been the UK’s local examination board. The term “IGCSE” is a registered trademark of the University of Cambridge. Usually when someone says IGCSE it is taken as IGCSE Cambridge from the CIE board.
IGCSE curricula are similar to O-Level rather than the UK’s national GCSE curricula. Therefore, the basis of the exam is considered rigorous and more difficult.
Acknowledgment
IGCSE is now offered at independent schools and private international schools in over 120 countries. The IGCSE certificate is recognized by most major colleges and universities. It meets the entry level requirement of universities and institutions in many countries. Thus, students can enter university on completion of IGCSE. However, most prefer to study the International Baccalaureate or A Level.
IGCSE is popular with adult learners and home learners. IGCSE is taken by students in the age group of 14-16 or 15-17. It allows alternative education students as well as adult students to sit for exams and continue to progress in personal education.
Some homeschoolers are choosing IGCSE in opposition to American high school curricula, as it is one year more advanced than the normal American high school course.
Subjects
The IGCSE has over 70 subjects. Students must take a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 14 subjects. First, second languages, sciences such as physics, biology and chemistry and mathematics are the core subjects. Students choosing other subjects range from accounting, economics, business studies and sociology to computer science, art and design and information and communication technology.
Students receive the IGCSE certificate for each subject. If you take 5 subjects, you will receive 5 IGCSE certificates. The number of subjects to take varies according to each school.
IGCSE follows the grading system of A* to G, and ‘Ungraded’ is U. Students must achieve a minimum grade of C in all 5 core subjects to progress to Advanced Level or Higher Education .
The overview of the IGCSE qualification is as follows:
A* is 4.0 or 4.3 as a grade
A is 4.0
B is 3.7
C is 3.0
D is 2.3
E is 2.0
F is 1.3
G is 1.o
U is 0.0 (unranked)
