How to Improve Your Vocabulary With Greek and Latin Word Parts

Memorizing the definitions of the most common Greek and Latin prefixes, roots, and suffixes will expand your reading vocabulary exponentially. Academic reading, especially in the social sciences and natural sciences, is filled with words with parts of Greek and Latin words. The verbal section of the SAT I is composed largely of academic words that have these parts of speech. Knowing even part of the word of an unknown word greatly improves the reader’s ability to accurately and effectively use surrounding context clues to figure out the meaning of those words. You will also increase your speaking and writing skills using Greek and Latin prefixes, roots and suffixes. But outside of mastering Greek and Latin, which parts of Greek and Latin words have the highest frequency?

Most used prefixes

This list, compiled by White, Sowell and Yanagihara (The Reading Teacher, 42, p. 306), has the twenty most commonly used prefixes. In fact, these mostly Greek and Latin prefixes account for 97% of all prefixed words. The prefixes listed are in order of frequency.
