A Debate on the Asian Educational Mentality
Americans like to believe they are “number 1” in everything, but what about our education system? According to the statistics, the American education system needs to be re-evaluated and reshaped in several ways. Standardized test scores lag far behind Asian countries, and our science and math scores are well below the Asian average. But what is really at stake here is not the educational reforms that need to be made, but rather that they must be seen from different perspectives. Western and Eastern philosophies tend to adopt extreme right or extreme left positions and a middle ground should be found.
While Westerners are looking to Asia in hopes of restructuring their educational framework, Easterners are also looking to the American West. The process runs counteractively and in parallel at the same time. How we arrive at optimal educational attainment is up for debate, and the two perspectives could not be more different in approach. It can be a bit difficult to approach this topic without stereotyping East and West. However, it remains that the most obvious difference is the philosophies of the East and the West. The Eastern implications of hard work, obligation, and educational success are capitalized and heavily emphasized in Asian philosophies. I don’t mean that the Western mentality doesn’t emphasize it as well, but it is approached much more lightly and not so intensely. Anyone of Asian descent knows this from personal experience or someone who grew up with a strict study schedule, keeping notes and learning material before being taught in class, and even being tutored after the school Academics and extracurricular activities are heavily emphasized in the Asian philosophy of education and are simply not explored to this extent in Western countries.
On the other hand, Asia also looks to the West as a role model in education. What is different here is not to imitate our educational models, but to incorporate some western perspective in addition to its strict educational paradigm and framework. Education in Asia can be too strict, pressured, stressful and too stifling in some cases. At its most extreme, of course, any educational approach will be less successful if it is too strict in any medium. Most Asian countries are not trying to find other ways to include creative, fun and less pressured ways to incorporate education into their children’s lives. Extreme parenting may still prevail in Eastern countries, but they are surely looking to Western philosophies to lighten the burden on academics.
Perhaps the educational changes can be fulfilled if we learn from both sides and adopt a middle, more regulated and less method of pursuing education. As American universities as the envy of every country, we seem to be doing something right, in our own way. What we need to reevaluate is what America is missing that these Asian countries seem to excel at: in science, math, determination, dedication, etc. Anyone can develop and instill a strong work ethic and it is by combining Eastern and Western philosophies that we can both learn from each other and improve.
America has also capitalized on accredited online education, something the Eastern worlds are far behind. Accredited online colleges offer students an additional outlet to learn on their own time, which is another example of why the strictness of Asian education systems does not seem to be. the best approach to education.
