Respiratory Therapist Schooling: What Types of Courses and Classes Should You Expect?
If you are interested in a career as a respiratory therapist, you should know that you are entering a field that requires a fair amount of education and licensing to get started. In fact, licensure is required to be a respiratory therapist in 48 states. Alaska and Hawaii do not have licensing requirements, otherwise in the other 48 states, you must complete a licensed program before you can be hired by any medical facility in those states.
What this entails is a bunch of math and science classes that will allow you to complete complex formulas in order to properly treat your patients.
The three things listed below should give you a good idea of the types of courses and classes you should expect to take to become a respiratory therapist.
Scientific courses: Some of the courses you may need to take to become a respiratory therapist are human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, chemistry, physics, and microbiology. This is to gain a good understanding of the human body and how it works in relation to breathing and the general progression of day-to-day human life. If you don’t think these courses are what you could succeed in or are interested in, you may want to consider a different career path.
Mathematics courses: What you will need to know is how to run basic formulas mathematically to enable you to give the right amounts of different drugs or chemicals to your patients. The need is to perform very basic mathematical equations, but you may also need to perform some more complex formulas. If you’re not good at math or have avoided it most of your life, you’ll want to think about possibly doing something else.
Health Care Courses: Basically, these courses will teach you how to work in the healthcare environment, from basic patient care to patient privacy. In addition, there will be courses on the equipment you will use and basic pharmacology courses to teach you the types of chemicals and drugs you will be working with. This is one of the most important trainings a respiratory therapist can receive in the field and you need to be aware when taking the courses of what the impact of this information can be.
These are general descriptions of the types of courses you may need to take to become a respiratory therapist. Some of the requirements may vary by state or location, so you may see a different variation depending on your location.
