## Physics – Algebra and Calculus Based Approaches

Many students take physics classes as a requirement for their undergraduate degree. This is one of the reasons why Intro Physics classes are so great. Generally speaking, there may be both algebra-based and calculus-based physics available at your college or university.

Algebra-based physics might be a good place to start, as it tries to take the calculus challenge out of the discussion. The concepts covered in a single quarter or semester are mostly based on common experiences that everyone has in everyday life in the 21st century.

The key here is to get comfortable with the vocabulary of general physics and the process of how scientists think. The physics lab course that complements the lecture helps make the equations meaningful.

A favorite lab/lecture is projectile motion. Here the concepts of time and distance are investigated for various objects of different weights propelled through the air at different angles. The experiment is simple: throw an object at an angle, see where it lands, and compare it to the equations that describe the motion of the projectile. Here, the actual concept is simple as everyone understands projectile motion. The challenge is to get involved in tracking the details and relate the data to the two-dimensional movement. There are easily defined time and distance changes that relate directly to the projectile’s equations of motion.

In this case, there is virtually no difference between how algebra-based physics and calculus-based physics are learned.

Computational physics provides an opportunity to show how our attempt to understand our environment has driven the development of mathematics to explain relationships. Most students in this sequence progress through Introduction to Physics and Calculus simultaneously. Trust me, the classes really complement each other and will lay the groundwork for the kind of studies involved in advanced courses in almost every applied science field. Increased exposure to how physicists apply and derive scientific ideas and how mathematicians derive mathematical relationships helps maintain a sense of discovery.

While there is no one-to-one comparison between where your physics class and your calculus class will be at any given time, you need the practice and the exposure. Many times a physics teacher will derive equations from basic relationships and where there is calculus, there is almost always algebra. In fact, you will quickly find that physics classes will make you a stronger calculus student because there will be a physical meaning to the calculus vocabulary.

Algebra-based or calculus-based, whichever suits you best, will help you appreciate the importance of discovery in the scientific process. Along the way, many of the great thinkers will be introduced and their contributions noted. You’ll find that many of the units we use every day are in recognition of people who have helped define and articulate our understanding of the natural world.

I wish you success on your journey.
