Math Anxiety and Its Negative Implications

What is math anxiety? There are many definitions of this, but to simplify things, I would define it as an emotionally unpleasant feeling inside a person that will hinder the learning process. Everyone has a certain amount of it, but they differ in how it is managed.

Why is anxiety in math stronger than in other subjects? It may be because the answer to a math question is clear in nature. It is a right or wrong direct; a direct exposure to weakness or strength in this subject. This is not so for others, such as Literature, where the answer is mostly open and subjective in nature.

This math anxiety makes a person dislike math because the guilt of not solving a math question makes them lose their self-esteem and pride. He may feel that he is being isolated from the rest. This bad feeling spirals and further reduces your chances of success with math. As math performance worsens, his attitude toward learning math rapidly deteriorates and may reach a stage where he is eventually unable to perform simple math calculations.

This anxiety would therefore hinder his learning pattern towards mathematics and leaves him helpless, fearful and worried. For him there is no more enjoyment in learning mathematics. What will he do next? Avoid math at all costs!

Avoiding mathematics is a step backwards and will reveal its ugly face as the person moves forward in life. For example, you may be at a disadvantage when applying for a job. With increasing demand of job industries, avoiding maths is definitely harmful. Many employers see mathematics as the ability to think logically to solve a set of real-life problems and this is the skill needed to do any job well.

Avoiding math because of math anxiety has an additional negative effect. It causes fear in any subject related to mathematics, be it statistical control studies (need to handle raw data), computer programming (calculation of numbers by software) or simple technical drawing (geometric dimensioning). Skill learning will be reduced.

So, to conclude, although learning mathematics is different from other subjects, it can be fun and interesting if you can accept failure as a part of learning. This will turn the fear of math anxiety into constructive learning with a change in attitude. Love math and math will love you back.
