Why do Indian students fall for learning Vedic mathematics? Understandably, they would be proud of India’s long-standing contributions to the field of mathematics, but apart from national pride, there are other subtle influences that pressure the average student to excel.
Indian parents, however, are not at all subtle about their children’s expectations. Like parents everywhere, they want their children to enjoy the good life. An elite education, international travel and a measure of security and wealth that comes from a glittering career are the stuff of new parents’ dreams. Indian parents often make educational decisions for their children even before they are born. Babies don’t know what they want. Food, a dry bottom and a hug before bed will do. But parents all over the world know exactly what they want for their babies.
There’s an old and not-so-politically-correct saying in America about Indian doctors, lawyers, and chiefs that implies that if you’re not one of these, you’re nobody. The following sample illustrates the simplicity of Vedic mathematical shortcuts
We find the square of any number ending in 5 using Vedic mathematics. For example, the equation to find the square of 65 is like this: 65×65=____.
- The answer will always end in 25. Period. So write it down on the right side of your answer space like this. 65×65=__25.
- Take the first number, in this case the number 6, and multiply it by itself plus one (6+1). So 6x(6+1, or 7)=42.
- Write 42 before 25 in the answer space to get the full answer of 65×65=4225. All done!
How long do you think it would take a child to figure that out in their head?
The thing is, anyone who knows their times tables up to 9, yes, just 9, can learn this trick in minutes and never again waste valuable test time squaring a number ending in 5. This is just one of many. incredibly simple techniques for computing in your head.
You don’t have to be Indian to crack the tough entrance exams
Now, if you are American, Canadian, French or Chinese, don’t think that this skill is only for Indian students.
