ASVAB Math Tricks – Divisibility Rules For Numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10

As a potential military recruit preparing for your next ASVAB or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the sheer number of math concepts required. However, some of them can be simplified to make your exam easier. In this article I will share some math tricks on how to quickly check the divisibility of a large number by factors of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

Divisibility rules for the number 4

To see if a number is divisible by 4, just look at the last two digits of the larger number. If the last two digits are divisible by 4, then the whole number is divisible by 4.

For example, given the number 5684, to see if it is divisible by 4, look at the last two digits which are 84. Since 84 is divisible by 4, the whole number is divisible by 4.

Divisibility rules for the number 5

If a number ends in 0 or 5, it will be divisible by 5, so for example 95 and 637,000 are both divisible by 5. given that they end in 5 and 0 respectively

Divisibility rules for the number 6

We have to be a little crafty here. Since 6 is a number that is 2 by 3, to see if a number is divisible by 6, we need to check if the number is divisible by 2 and by 3. If it is both divisible by 6, that number is divisible by 6.

When you do this calculation, you will see that 8 does not fit neatly into this number, and therefore this number is not divisible by 8.

The 9’s trick is similar to the 3’s trick, where you add the digits of the individual numbers. However, they must add up to a multiple of 9 instead of just a multiple of 3.
