Some K-12 Schools Putting Fewer Students in Special Education
Over the past two years, Long Island schools have been placing fewer students in special education classes. Instead, some Long Island students with special needs have been getting tutoring to help them keep up with their schoolwork.
Integrating students into Long Island schools
At first glance, it makes sense to integrate special needs students attending Long Island schools into a regular classroom as much as possible. If the student with special needs can attend classes with their peers, there is a cost savings for the board of education. No matter what we want for our children who attend schools on Long Island, there are only so many dollars available for education.
For too long, kids who were “different” were kept out of the mainstream. Students in mainstream education did not have many opportunities to meet or interact with them. Special Education students were the object of suspicion and/or ridicule, simply because the other students did not understand them; all they knew was that these other children were different. Being different was not something to celebrate at the time.
Any measure that helps students attending Long Island schools learn to be tolerant of others can only be a good thing. Humans tend to distrust things (and people) they don’t understand. Over time, mainstreaming can help reinforce the idea that there is no “us” or “them” in Long Island schools. All students are in the environment to learn together and to learn from each other.
Long Island schools must ensure students don’t fall through the cracks
It would be very unfortunate if, in order to save a few dollars, access to special education programs was denied to students who need to be in a different learning environment to do their best work. We should not be too quick to either separate students from their peers or push them into mainstream learning environments in Long Island schools.
Instead, we need to take the time and allocate the appropriate resources for a thorough investigation when a student is struggling to learn in schools. Only with a proper diagnosis of a difficulty can a plan be implemented in Long Island schools to address the needs of that student.
Our children are our most valuable resource. When they don’t get the support they need to become effective learners, we’re setting them up to fail in life. Long Island teachers and school administrators would be much better off finding out what the students’ needs are and finding the resources to meet them, whether in the regular or alternative classroom.
