Why Extracurricular Activities Are an Important Part of Your Child’s Education
It is strongly believed, and rightly so, that the most important part of your child’s education is getting good grades in math, English, science and other subjects they enjoy. Good grades open many doors and are seen as the standard way kids progress through college and beyond, even leading to success in their chosen career.
However, it should not be forgotten that extracurricular activities are also an important part of everyone’s education. While your child may be learning algebraic equations or chemical formulas in the classroom, it’s extracurricular activities that add richness to your child’s education. Universities often give priority to applicants who have extensive extra-curricular activities on their application and UCAS personal statement, as well as having the qualifications required to gain entry to their chosen course.
Team sports, such as hockey, netball and soccer, for example, teach us Parenting.org says that being part of team sports is important because participation in sports does so much more than keeping busy children; it teaches them three essential skills to succeed in life.
Goal Setting Sports give children a safe place to set goals and experience the thrill of achieving them. Children can strive to set personal bests and gain confidence in their abilities. This confidence helps them succeed in school and in their personal relationships, and helps prepare them for success as adults. Overcoming Adversity As American football coach Kevin Kush writes in his book, The 100-Yard Classroom, "Sport’s greatest gift to its participants is the opportunity to learn to overcome adversity in a safe and controlled environment." By encouraging your child to commit to a sports team or other extracurricular school activity, you are teaching them to overcome adversity, which is critical to success in life. Construction legend Michael Jordan once said: "I have failed time and time again in my life. And that’s why I get it." Not allowing your child to give up when they fear failure or rejection by friends, or are tired of working hard, builds character that can propel your child into life as a successful and productive adult.
If your child isn’t into sports, there are plenty of extracurricular activities they can participate in. Being part of a theater group, for example, can take you out of your comfort zone and help you improve your confidence and public speaking skills. These are great traits for the next CEO of a multinational corporation that won’t be learned in the physics lab.
These are extracurricular activities that help your child develop a well-rounded education, connect with different groups of friends, and test the waters to see what they would like to be when they finish their academic education.
Many schools have excellent grades at GCSE or A level. While this shouldn’t be ignored, make sure you see what else they offer your children. What happens when the school bell rings? Do all the kids rush home to do homework and watch TV, or are they more willing to participate in other activities?
