Moonlighting More Common For Teachers

Moonlighting is not a new term, in fact it has been around for decades; however, with these tough economic times, more and more people are starting to use the term to describe themselves firsthand. Today, some Americans are working two or even three jobs to make ends meet. Unfortunately, education is one of the professions that is taking a hit. One researcher estimates that their moonlighting rates can be four times higher than other full-time, college-educated salaried workers.

The term “moonlighting” can be described as the 1 in 17 American adults who work a second job. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, thirty-five percent of freelancers say they look for extra jobs to pay the bills.

Teachers have always been known to add a second job during the summer break months or stay out of school during the school year to tutor children or help run school clubs, but increasingly plus teachers looking outside the teaching profession and looking for things that will help them escape pay freezes and furlough days. In 1981, about 11 percent of teachers moonlighted; the figure has risen to about one in five today. They are now filling jobs as waiters, waitresses, tutors, bus drivers, lawn mowers, personal trainers and more. The average moonlighting teacher now works an additional 15.2 hours per week, in addition to grading student work, creating lesson plans, and participating in various extracurricular activities. A recent study said that nearly five percent of all US workers have a second job; however, more than 300,000 of the 2 million teachers in the United States were employed outside the school system during the school year.

The most recent survey conducted by researchers at Sam Houston State University shows that the rate of education professionals who held supplemental jobs this school year was the highest rate in three decades. For example, the percentage of educators in Texas who work an extra job has increased from 22% in 1980 to more than 41% in 2010. A 2007 survey in North Carolina also showed that the rate of moonlighting teachers had increased to over 72%.

However, with these numbers comes a bit of irony. The national average salary for a public school teacher has actually increased over the past few decades. During the 2009-2010 school year, the median income for teachers was $55,350. So why are more and more teachers looking for extra income? Well, many teachers are single parents or have an unemployed or disabled spouse, so they’re trying to support their family on one salary. It also doesn’t help that many schools are freezing teacher salaries. The average rate has been relatively flat over the past two decades after accounting for the value of the dollar.

Another factor that can contribute to a large number of moonlighters is the starting pay of many young teachers just starting out in their profession. Earnings for entry-level teachers tend to be significantly lower than most other recent college graduates entering their careers in other professions. In fact, studies show that new teachers typically earn about $10,000 less than their peers who are in different fields.

Researchers, however, believe there is a way to help lower that rate. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which collects data on student achievement around the world, suggested that the United States should do a better job of trying to enrich the teaching profession in order to improve student performance. They made recommendations such as using stricter requirements to become a teacher, giving their educators better training, offering higher pay rates, fining teachers a productive summer job and merit pay.

The OECD reported that countries that pay their teachers more, such as Japan and South Korea, have higher proficiency scores in math, reading and science than the US.

“International comparisons show that in the highest-performing countries, teachers tend to be paid better relative to others, educational credentials are valued more highly, and a larger share of education spending is devoted to instructional services than in U.S. United”. concludes the OECD report.

So we hope our government can take these suggestions and find a way to help the teachers. Teaching is one of the most important professions in our world. They are the ones who will provide our children with the skills to help them become future leaders. We want our educators to be able to focus all their attention on the children in their classroom, without having to worry about how they will make ends meet or whether they will be able to find a second job before they lose their home. .
