Important Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging, it is not something that inevitably happens in later life. Rather, it is one of the dementia disorders, a group of brain diseases that lead to the loss of mental and physical functions. Many of the symptoms mentioned in this article seem to become more common as we get older, but if the symptoms completely change the person’s character or if the problem got steadily worse over the course of 6 months, you should think about it.
The following information is taken from the book “The Alzheimer’s Action Plan”.
Memory deficits:
Difficulty learning and retaining new information. Trouble with step-by-step reasoning, such as following instructions or figuring out logically why something doesn’t work. Repeating Forgetting recent conversations or events. Not knowing where to look for misplaced things, because they can’t retrace their steps or remember where they might have had something last. Inability to remember normal words, so they substitute general words for specific nouns, such as “the girls” for wife and daughter or “the cleaner” for the vacuum cleaner. They may also use words that don’t sound quite right but make sense to them. For example, a math teacher started saying, “That doesn’t correlate,” whenever she was confused. Read and reread instructions without understanding.
Poor judgment calls
Bad financial decisions, such as falling for a get-rich-quick scam that they could have avoided before. Excessive generosity with money. Going out alone at night in a dangerous area.
confusion
Getting lost in familiar places Misinterpreting what they hear. Repeatedly asking what they are supposed to do right now. Struggling to make simple decisions or choices. Confusing the past with the present, like believing they still pay their bills on time like they used to, or trying to go to their old office. Not knowing how to respond if something unexpected happens, such as encountering a detour while driving. Confused with tasks that require the use of numbers, such as making change or paying bills.
Behavior changes
Abandon your normal routines and social activities. Change your preferences for both food and clothing. Losing interest in hobbies, family, friends or work. Repeating the same action, like dusting the same place, or never completing a task because they forget they set out to do it. Difficulty starting, planning, or organizing meals, trips, or any previously regular event, in part because they are easily distracted. A reduced attention span; wanting to leave an event shortly after arriving. Problems driving or doing routine activities. Visuospatial problems, such as overreaching objects or misjudging the distance between cars. Not respecting the rules of polite behavior. Obsessively checking things, such as whether doors are locked. Hoarding things of little value, like tissue boxes. Refusing treatment for other conditions, especially depression.
personality
Becoming passive and less animated. Resist change or anything new. Becoming silly, grumpy, generous or trusting. Being argumentative, especially at work and at home. Get angry or frustrated easily. Taking an unusual risk. Acting impulsively, without regard for the feelings of others. Misunderstanding sarcasm, humor or subtleties. Becoming obstinate, stubborn, callous, tactless, suspicious, threatening, or accusatory. Responding badly to any kind of change, whether traveling, staying in hospital or changing rooms.
