Where Did Our Educational System Go Wrong?

Mathematics is a subject that is bound to evolve over time; however, something, somehow, went wrong, somewhere along the line, which has resulted in the high percentile numberlessness of our youth today! The mid-seventies were the years in which new mathematical methodologies were introduced. Psychologists and educators began to investigate how they could improve the educational process by implementing unproven theories. In other words, we experiment with our children.

Many developing countries, which normally follow the Western trend, could not keep pace with the changes that involved constant adaptation of new teaching methodologies. The reprinting of new textbooks and the retraining of teachers, for the implementation of those new innovative techniques, were not within their budget. As a result, they had no choice but to stick with what worked for them and kept the ball rolling. Why try to fix what isn’t broken?

Today, we are not only behind in properly educating our children, but also in producing math teachers who are not even subject oriented. William Schmidt, distinguished professor of education at the University, found that future elementary and middle school math teachers in the US are not as prepared as those in other countries. “And that, combined with a weak U.S. math curriculum, produces similarly weak student achievement,” he said.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan stated that American children are falling behind in these areas and may not be able to compete globally. “It has huge implications,” Duncan said, “I think as a real economic imperative we have to educate our way to a better economy.” He added: “The solution is to adopt an international benchmark and standard to create data systems to measure student success and inform teachers about how to improve practice and turn around low-performing schools.” Source CNN.

It’s no use crying over spilled milk! What’s done is done! We have to pick up the pieces and start again. And although it might take at least two generations to undo the wrong done, we still have to retread the trodden path.

Where to start? Maybe the laws need to be changed to begin with. Not all teachers who reprimand, punish a child for misbehavior or otherwise, are psychotic. Not all teachers who touch a child are child abusers. Our “psyche” must change and return to “normal”. Where are the days when a child would think twice before telling his parents that he was being punished at school, for fear of being reprimanded by them?

Two educational psychologists at the University of Texas, Willson and Hughes, say, “Often, parents have to take at least some of the blame or credit.”

Willson and Hughes suggest that parents should become more involved with their child’s school and schooling in order to reduce the risk of their child being held back. They say parents can help by communicating regularly with teachers and taking responsibility for monitoring children’s school work and activities. Helping children with their homework can give them the confidence they need at school.

Today, more than ever, there are more opportunities for parents to get involved in their children’s education. Parents can now use the Internet as a tool with resources that were not accessible just a few years ago. Moments like the ones we are living today is the moment of reflection and self-analysis; a time when we desperately need to take the actions that will help forge a legacy that we will leave behind, for our future generations.
