Children Who Are Given an Advantage

As a mother to Donovan, ages 2-7, and Darren, 22, I knew early in their lives that I would not leave their education entirely up to schools and teachers. I decided that I would give these children a head start in life, in their education. I’m just an ordinary, everyday, ordinary mom who struggles like everyone else. I only have a high school diploma and 2 years of college, but I have big hopes and dreams for my 2 children. Here’s what I did to give them “the edge”!

I started reading to my children when they were just out of the womb. I think reading to them often, singing to them and talking to them (not in baby talk) really gives them the edge they’ll need in life. Experts say that a child’s mind develops and learns rapidly and gains most knowledge between the ages of 0 and 3… I believe them! I knew that somewhere in the back of those little heads, that information was being stored for later use.

Now, at first, my mom thought I was crazy when she found out that my 18-month-old son not only knew his ABCs, but could count to 20. A little after he turned 3 1/2, I was counting right. He passed 100. He had learned that all the planets, most of the presidents, all of the states (their location on a blank map), and most of their capitals, could write the months and days of the week and more! By the time they started preschool, they could recognize and write small 3- and 4-letter words. I read them every day.

The first thing I did was buy a mat (from Wal-Mart) with the ABC’s on it and all the ABC’s would correspond to the names of the animals that started with those letters. I also bought flash cards (same place) that have everyday words on them. Once they started recognizing and writing these everyday words, they started reading like little pros!

It really wasn’t hard work! It pays in big dividends. Both of my sons have been at the top of their class, not just “one of the best” in their class! And you know what… they love it! The 22-year-old could write his name in cursive right after he turned 4. Both excel in math, English and especially reading. My oldest son, even today, reads all kinds of books. Wherever he goes, if there is any magazine or literature around, he will pick it up to read. It makes your children well rounded. My 7 year old son is also a recommended reader. He has been tested in school and in first grade, his reading was 3.8, meaning he reads at a third grade level, 8 months into school. He is now in 2nd grade and his reading average is 4.6, which means he is reading at a 4th grade level, 6 months into school. His overall reading grade for the year is 104.6%. His overall spelling score is 110% and his math score is 99%. Great spelling! 99% of the time he wins 100.

The thing is, your child can too! Don’t waste your money on the expensive stuff, just go to Wal-mart, K-mart or retailers like these and buy flash cards for writing, counting, multiplying, etc. The 7-year-old has known all the multiplications. (1 – 12) since he started school last year, so, just before he starts 2nd! It’s not that I’m a genius, it’s just that I started small and kept teaching until I had nothing to teach him because of his age. I’ve even started teaching him geometry, 6th grade level and he can actually work most of the problems I give him. You got the concept! It’s amazing how when you teach and teach them, the concepts in these classes become so easy to understand!

Most importantly, read to your child every day WITHOUT FAILURE! And, when they start reading on their own, make them read at least 45 minutes a day.

I have bought the scholastic dictionary, the encyclopedia and many chapter books for him to read. Must read on the weekend too. He has learned so many “fun facts” and knows quite a bit about any topic you ask, be it animals, people, places or things. It surprises me most of the time. My eldest son is the same.

I remember when she started Kindergarten in Nashville, TN, the teacher asked me to come in so she could talk to me. I couldn’t imagine what the hell he wanted because I knew he couldn’t misbehave; he knows i can’t stand it!

Well, she said, “I only have one thing to say…I’m blown away”! She said she had asked the children to bring in the magazines she had on her bookshelf and to cut out pictures and make a collage. She wanted them to write a story based solely on the pictures they saw. Well, my son got a “People” magazine and took it to him and started reading it – little words, big words and all! He was so surprised that he had to call me to tell me.

My 7 year old had a teacher who had the same reaction! I had started a private school here in Memphis, TN when I was in what they call “Pre-K” (kindergarten). One day he said to me: ‘Mrs. Ballard, Donovan can read’. I said ‘uh-huh’. She said, “No, Mrs. Ballard, I mean you can actually read”! I said, ‘yeah, I know… I’m the one who taught him.’ I then explained to him how he knows the names of the planets, presidents, states, capitals, months, days of the year, the oath of allegiance, etc. She said, “Give yourself a pat on the back…that’s awesome, awesome”!

As I mentioned before, it really isn’t hard. Other tips I recommend is to point, a lot, at the objects when the children started to “talk”. They will pick up a lot of words this way. Your vocabulary will increase! My son and I drive past signs on the way to school and work and say and spell words on common street signs or think of word synonyms or homophones.

One way to get your child to see reading as fun is to offer them personalized books. These books have the child’s name written into the story. That child will not be able to put the book down. If they can’t read, I bet they will try to read it and once they learn to read this book, they won’t put it down! I only wish I had known about these personalized children’s books when my children were young and could not read or were just starting to read! I would have gotten a whole library of them!

I love teaching my kids new things and it’s such a joy to see them really “get it”! I would love to help you help your child read. It brings me a lot of satisfaction. Please email me at beverly_ballard@hotmail.com and I will tell you how to order these books. There are lots and lots of titles to choose from and I’m sure there’s a title to suit your needs.

Keep working, the work and the foundation you may have already laid and remember, the key is READ, READ,

TO READ!!!!
