Most Colleges Require Letters Of Recommendation

I cannot overstate the importance of developing strong relationships with high school teachers and counselors as early as possible. A well-written and compelling letter can absolutely make the difference between being accepted or rejected at any school.

Students leading one or more of their classes should first ask teachers to write a letter of recommendation (LOR). However, if a teacher is reluctant, hesitant, or unenthusiastic about writing such a letter, another teacher should be approached, who is likely to make the student shine. A less than exemplary LOR is worth virtually nothing!

Choose wisely. I often review the content and grammar of LORs, and I am constantly amazed at how careless and lax some teachers, counselors, and other well-meaning people can be with such an important letter. Choose teachers who have expressed a genuine interest in the student’s future.

Most schools require LORs from guidance counselors, and some ask for one or more from the student’s English, science, and/or math teachers. Additional LORs, letters other than those requested on the school application, are also recommended. I don’t suggest more than two extras, unless a third is absolutely extraordinary.

Unless the student is an athlete, any teacher is preferable to a coach unless the coach actually teaches a core or standard subject such as English, chemistry, history, math, or a language. In some cases, the writer actually asks the student for an outline of what they should write! Each letter should be from someone who knows the student well, such as:

o A university professor (excellent)

o A high-ranking military officer (also excellent)

or A member of the clergy

or President or manager of a major corporation

o A member of a volunteer organization where the student performed community service

o The parent of a disabled student volunteering, ie Special Olympics

o A parent whose child was tutored by the student

The LOR can also be from a family member with a different last name if the above criteria are met, but must not state that it is from a family member to avoid appearing biased.

If the LORs are not written in English, I recommend attaching the English translation and attaching a preface that reads: “For your convenience, the following is the English translation of the attached letter “.

The guidance counselors present all the LORs from the institute. Students should be warned not to submit any sealed or unsealed LORs obtained on their own and outside of their school! Any LOR from someone other than a teacher or guidance counselor must be mailed by the person who wrote it, not the student.

All LORs should be addressed as follows:

Date (Be sure to include the student’s SS number or school ID number.)

[Name of the school]

[Director’s name if you know it]

Director of Admissions

[Street or P.O. Box]

[City, State, Zip, Zip+4 if available]

RE: Name of the student

Dear Director: [You need to know their name]

By following these instructions, students will surely increase their advantage, even if they are a final year student. Top students also need an edge because they are competing with other exceptional students. Those with less than exemplary numbers will have a better chance of being accepted into the admissions process with an exceptional LOR.

Every student needs this all-important advantage in every aspect of the admissions process. Without outstanding LORs, the chances of acceptance are reduced proportionally…
