## From STEM To STEAM – Adding Art To Your Educational Mix

We often use the phrase; “it’s an art and a science” when describing complex tasks that we humans perform. Perhaps we use this phrase because it better describes reality; and, if so, perhaps art and science are much closer in many human endeavors than we have been willing to readily admit. Is it a mistake of the academic world to separate the two and define them as entirely separate tracks and categories?

One thing I’ve found running a think tank is that those with superior math skills often have a taste for music and can play music quite well. Many who are brilliant in physics can also do it, and even more are amateur artists. Psychological researchers know and understand how robust spatial reasoning is needed to take 3D objects and render them on a 2D canvas, and these researchers also know that sounds, temperature, weather, and even reading of music follow patterns in the same way that advanced mathematics will.

I recently read an interesting post about Creative Thinking titled; “STEAM Lesson Ideas for K-12” posted on September 22, 2017 by Michelle Korenfeld who said: “STEAM education is about adding Arts to STEM. What you get is more curiosity, better attitudes, and better grades . Here are some ideas: Start with a painting or poem of zebras and lions and work your way up to vision tricks and three-dimensional vision. When a whole herd of zebras flees, the stripes blur the predator’s vision.”

Well said indeed, and I have to say I totally agree. Now, if you look at fractal design, it’s all about math, so are the golden ratios. Stephen Wolfram has a great book worth reading called “A New Kind of Science” and one look at the designs in it will immediately link mathematics to art. Also, when we look at nature and consider biomimicry there are also so many opportunities; for industrial, robotics, structural, aerospace, marine, space engineering. Everything is “ONE” and art and science go together, always have!

Are we missing the boat by not educating young minds with art, music, sculpture and dance? Are we hindering their minds from finding other patterns or understanding those patterns when we work with advanced math and physics, biology and chemistry, engineering and design? It seems to me that we are, and I find this observation quite discouraging and somewhat objectionable. Isn’t it time we helped STEM and STEAM subjects into the future of education? Please think about this.
