Back to School in Your 50s and Beyond?
“Is it worth spending money on learning if you’re in your 50s or 60s?”
The answer to this is, most emphatically, a resounding, “YES!”
Sometimes one of the hardest things for us to do once we’ve reached that age and gained a lot of life experience along the way is to simply humble ourselves. That is correct, let’s humble ourselves and they admit that even if we have 5 college degrees in marketing and 25 years of experience with a brick-and-mortar marketing company, we don’t know much when it comes to the most critical points of online marketing. It truly is a whole different world out there, and while your degrees, which didn’t stop you from getting fired or your bonuses cut, will help you in some basic ways, the nuts and bolts of successful online marketing will they will completely bypass you if you don’t get the information you need.
Not only has it been proven time and time again that exercising our minds can keep us sharper as the years go by, but we also need to keep up with the times. Undoubtedly, the Internet has brought us all to a different way of learning. It’s actually the fastest way to search for topics that interest us personally, we can drift from one topic to the next without stopping just to tell ourselves that maybe it’s time to stop for the day.
The Internet has also expanded the potential for learning in other ways. There was a time when “going back to school” meant going to the local college, signing up for classes, and sitting in a physical classroom with other people eager to learn something new.
Those of us in our 50s or 60s right now are the generation that grew up without computers in our childhood. It’s true… believe it or not! The closest I got to a “computer” were the first calculators that went beyond the basics. I often thought my fingers were much faster when doing math.
There was never anything that really prepared us in that age group for what was to come. For some of us, there were several years of adulthood before we even bought a computer for our home. My experience with anything remotely “computer like” was learning how to use a word processor at the time. Even my two daughters, now that I think about it, managed to graduate from high school without ever having access to the Internet in our home. In fact, I was still using my IBM Selectric to type.
Despite my love for “computer stuff”, there are still days when I find myself wishing it would go away. I know, I know, it’s called “Turn it off!”. On the other hand, there is always one more item of interest that I can look up just to learn about. The world of knowledge on the internet is limitless and I often jokingly say, “Who’d have thought, huh?” when I come across some interesting fact, image or story of a place I will never visit or see in my life. Here it is and my horizon has expanded again.
There is no doubt that the Internet has profoundly affected where and how we learn. However, everything we learn is valuable, and there are times when it is not only a good idea, but most of all wisdom, to spend a little cash to help us focus on learning to achieve our goals.
As I worked my way through my 10 years of widowhood, I learned to drive a big truck at age 50 just because I wanted to. While driving, I often commented that it was the only job I’ve ever had where it didn’t matter if you were male or female, how old you were, or what you had done before. The truck, in other words, didn’t care. You either knew how to drive it or you didn’t.
The internet is the same as driving this truck. The computer has no idea who is asking for the information and doesn’t care if you are younger, older, what gender you are, or if you are sleep deprived in Sheboygan, WI. Therefore, knowing how to best take advantage of this wonderful aspect of our lives is the smartest decision anyone can make if there is any desire to expand our web presence.
Despite what it may seem, yes, it is possible to stumble and “learn along the way”. But if you really want to achieve success, whether it’s with an online business or simply generating interest in a personal or charity website, there comes a time when we have to go back to school.
This means working through the available options and finding the education that best focuses on the goal you want to achieve. It’s also time to “put your money where your mouth is”, because sooner or later you’ll find that trying to do everything for free just won’t cut it.
Save yourself both time and agony by committing to focused training from the get-go, or stop what you’re doing that’s obviously not working and get into a solid, proven learning program.
The main reason you should pay some cash to learn? Why lose focus on the internet, go through all those emails you get to learn how to make money while you sleep (for free, of course, which is never) or listen to every guru that comes your way. exactly nowhere The basics, the fundamentals of any online success require the same learning you would need to get a job in marketing, say, offline. It’s simply about acquiring subject-specific knowledge that will help you succeed in the world it was intended for.
