## Solving Cryptograms

Solving cryptograms is not as difficult as you might think. At first glance, a cryptogram looks like a meaningless arrangement of random letters. But if you know a few things about the English language and learn some tips from experts, you’ll be solving cryptograms in no time.

**Cryptogram Basics:** In any kind of standard cryptogram puzzle, one letter of the alphabet is replaced by another. The same substitution is used in only one puzzle. If A = Z, it will always equal Z in this puzzle. But you shouldn’t assume that Z = A. Probably not. Each new puzzle uses a new code.

**Remember:**

- The most used letter in English is E. All the letters of the alphabet in order of most to least frequent are: E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R, D, L, U, C, M, P, F, Y, W, G, B, V, K, J, X, Z, Q.
- Usually the only words in a letter are
*me*or to (Rarely, or is a word.) - An apostrophe indicates a contraction (
*no, they did*) or a possessive noun (*El Fred, the one of the family*).

**With these facts in mind, here are some tips for solving cryptograms.**

- Always work in pencil, at least until you are very confident in your abilities.
- Look at 1-letter words and 3-letter words first. 1 letter words are
*me*or*a*. The most common 3-letter words are*the*&*i*. Other common 3-letter words are*no, for, however, you are, you, all of you, can*i*none*. If a 3-letter word is followed by a comma, it’s probably the word*i*or*drink*t. There is often a 3 letter word at the beginning of a sentence*The*. - Contractions or possessives usually end in
*New Testament*or*from __*. If two identical letters follow an apostrophe, they are probably the letter L, as in*well* - After you have read the whole passage, guess some 1 letter words, 3 letter words and words with apostrophes. Pencil in substitutions for one or two of these words throughout the rest of the selection.
- If the letters you replaced are correct, you’ll see other words start to appear. If nothing looks right, delete and start over.

**Look at this example:**

(Three *** represent pauses between words.)

BMQB ‘ P *** BMJ *** SQD *** BMJ *** LRRDNJ *** LKXAGFJ P.

See two identical 3-letter words. I guess they could be I. If you replace all the B’s with As, all the Ms with Ns, and all the J’s with D’s, you get:

AN _ A’ _ *** I *** _ _ _ *** I……..You think to yourself, what could that first word be????

Then, because you took my advice and used an eraser, you quickly erase those ideas and start over. Now assume that BMJ is HE.

Now you write:

TH _ T’ _ *** EL *** _ _ _ *** EL…..

which seems much more reasonable. Now you can conclude that Q is A and P is S to write THAT IS. Then you replace the other Q’s and P’s with those letters and you’re on your way.

Of course, this is a very short example, so you might have a hard time solving this whole sentence. But just in case you’re curious… THIS IS HOW THE COOKIE IS MADE.
