Positive Changes Achieved by Exercising Mind, Body & Spirit
My story tells the struggles I had as a 23-year-old divorced single mother of three children, ages six, four, and one, and then shows some practical ways to change my life and reclaim my personal power. Self-pity, anger, guilt, and self-loathing were my constant emotional companions. I was suffering physically, mentally and spiritually. In 1980, I made $80 a week, received sporadic child support payments of $300 a month, and lived in fear of not surviving. I was afraid of life and worried constantly. I smoked, ate unhealthy food, didn’t exercise and spent endless hours watching TV. My mind was constantly focused on what everyone else in my life would have to change in order for me to be happy. Since I couldn’t change anyone else, I thought I was a hopeless failure and couldn’t do anything right.
With Alanon’s help and counseling, I realized that I did have options and I was the one who needed to change. I overheard my own conversation. It was negative. I replaced my self-talk: “I’m stupid” with “I’m learning” and “It’s not worth it” with “I’m good enough.”
One of my goals was to quit smoking. Studies showed the negative effects of smoking and I didn’t like that I was addicted to cigarettes. I had tried to quit smoking many times before. Success was realized when I used visualizations and affirmations to quit smoking. Affirmations are simple statements you say to yourself, like “I can”… “I am good enough”… “I am successful”. Saying affirmations works because your subconscious mind creates exactly what you say to it. However, I was gaining five pounds a month and being good at math I realized that if I continued, I would weigh sixty pounds more in a year. Determined not to go back to smoking to eliminate the weight gain, I turned to affirmations and exercise.
When I started working out, my muscles hurt and I wanted to quit because I wasn’t seeing results fast enough. I would say that affirmations help me get through work. Not only did it improve my physical strength, it also improved my self-image and my attitude towards life. Focusing on affirmations made the workout easier because I was thinking positive things. Just as my body reaped the benefits of exercising twenty-four hours later, so did my mind. Throughout the day I found myself repeating the affirmations.
Combining exercise with affirmations helped me in many of my daily struggles. If I found myself in an uncomfortable situation, I would start to connect with the uncomfortable feeling I was training and affirmations would come to mind. They helped me gain the self-confidence I needed to face my everyday fears and insecurities.
My spirit was increasingly at peace because my body and mind were working together as one. Positive energy filled my being. Not only was I learning to accept and love myself, but I had more energy to deal with being a single parent.
This simple technique of saying positive affirmations while walking, running or lifting weights is a great way to boost your self-esteem and learn to love your whole self, mind, body and spirit.
