Best Method to Prepare for the Common Admission Test (CAT) in Raipur-Chhattisgarh?
The IIMs, especially the top 3 – Ahmedabad, Calcutta and Bangalore – are world-renowned for their quality of students, faculty and education, and also for the jobs students get there during the placement season every year.
Around 1.94 lakh students took the CAT exam this year, a jump of nearly 13% from the 2013 number of 1.72 lakh. A significant proportion of these students are located in larger metropolitan areas. So a question arises. Can students from Raipur, Bilaspur, Bhilai or other cities of Chhattisgarh effectively prepare for this exam? They necessarily need to prepare from one of the biggest coaching centers like Indore, Delhi, Mumbai etc. to be successful?
Before that, let’s take a look at the exam candidates’ tests.
– The Common Admission Test (CAT) is an all-India test conducted by the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) as an entrance examination for admission to postgraduate and fellowship programs in management courses of various institutes of India.
– Each institute uses CAT score along with other parameters like academic background, other extracurricular achievements and performance in group discussion and personal interview (GD and PI) to select candidates.
The exam lasts 170 minutes and has a total of 100 questions. 50 questions on Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation and 50 on Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning.
The maths tested in CAT is 9th and 10th standard so it is more about analytical aptitude than maths. Since most of the candidates taking CAT in Chhattisgarh are engineers, maths is usually less of a problem. English is a bigger challenge for them and something that also attracts more attention.
Hindi is the most widely spoken language in Chhattisgarh. Most of the school curriculum is published in Hindi in Chhhattisgarh. English is not of much importance even in the larger cities of Raipur, Durg-Bhilai and Bilaspur. Therefore, candidates here need to make a greater effort to improve their English. This starts from vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation and extends to speaking, writing and reading (speed reading) skills.
Fortunately, there are many good coaching institutes for CAT in Raipur that can help students prepare systematically. While there are bigger names like Time Tutorials, Professional Tutorials (PT), IMS learning and Career Launcher, there are some local but well-respected names like ProC Education, Invest in Career, Maestro, etc. Most of these institutes have branches in Tatyapara Zone, Sharda Chowk and Phool Chowk which are the training centers of the city. Another center is Shankar Nagar, for the convenience of students in this area.
One of the commonly recommended approaches to improving vocabulary is the consistent use and review of a certain number of words each day. Use a flash card to remember difficult words. Keep the flash card handy and use it while walking, waiting for the bus at the bus stop, during breaks between lectures, etc. Basically, use it whenever you have even a minute to spare.
There are also a few good training institutes for TAC in Durg-Bhilai and some of them recommend reading as much English literature as possible to improve reading and comprehension skills. There are also local branches of Career Launcher (CL), Professional Tutorials (PT), TIME, IMS etc. in Bhilai and most of them are concentrated in the Civic Center area. It is recommended to read an English newspaper every day. “The Hindu” is recommended. This will also help improve general awareness. Some coaching institutes also recommend reading as many English non-fiction novels as possible.
For Bilaspur students who want to work especially on their maths, DI and problem solving speed, practicing mental calculations is recommended. Most of the top coaching institutes for CAT in Bilaspur are concentrated in the Old Bus Stand area which spots familiar names like TIME, IMS etc as well as local names like Bulls Eye. CAT aspirants are advised to practice simple math calculations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and even division while walking on the road, seeing number plates etc. This can also be very effective.
CAT is all about aptitude and speed. With systematic and focused preparation, students can improve in both and increase their chances of cracking the CAT.
