During August, we walked from school to school to school delivering our workshop in each school as the start of the year for each school team. We have been doing this every August for the past 15 years so we know what to expect from the school staff who are coming back for another year. But this year was a little different. Instead of finding tanned, relaxed and exuberant staff excited to start another school year, this year, in many schools, we’ve also seen more apprehension and cynicism than usual in those usual days before students return. As we traveled from school to school, and from state to state, we could feel the concern among school staff at all levels.
Perhaps more this year than ever, teachers are facing what some call “the perfect storm” (USA Today, 08/14/03). Shrinking budgets and increasing proficiency testing requirements for both students and teachers are asking educators in many states. , the federal No Child Left Behind law with its many rules, but no money to engineer compliance, and you may be in dire straits to survive. In Texas, an assistant principal captured the deep apprehension and concern by noting that in his state they refer to the law as No Child Left Behind, No Teacher Standing.
If teachers are facing greater challenges than ever before, at a time when they are equipped with fewer resources than ever before, then it becomes crucial to use and make the most of every second of instructional time. However, the typical teacher wastes about 22 minutes out of every 50 minutes of instructional time on on-demand behavior management. This is time that no contemporary teacher can afford to waste. These are just a few of our innovative and unique methods to help you create your most productive school year yet.
1. SURVEY YOUR CONSUMERS
People, both young and old, really like having a say in how things are done. no? Do you want to attract the attention of your students from the first moment? Do you want them to see you and the class positively? Do you want them to feel hopeful and optimistic about what your class will cover this course? Here’s a quick, almost foolproof method: survey your “consumers” and give them a voice. Take a poll and watch the looks of surprise and total desire to speak their mind, and thank you for asking.
2. GUIDANCE IS NEVER ENOUGH
Organizations work best when every player has been trained and guided to understand and meet the standards. NOTE: Stating expectations is rarely enough to achieve compliance. For example, students who have not been taught adult interaction skills by their parents may not have the skills to properly interact with their teacher, principal, bus driver, etc. The statement of expectations may do little to teach what words to use, what words to use. not to use, what tone of voice, what voice level, how often to disobey, etc. You can expect whatever you want from students, but if you don’t teach it, it can be an unfair expectation, like expecting students to have reading or math skills without first teaching them.
Students will not only lack the interaction skills of adults, but will need skills training to develop and use appropriate skills for peer interaction, compliance, verbosity, punctuality, attendance, attitude, focus, etc. Unless you’re teaching ALL the skills you expect, you’re likely still wasting 22 minutes out of every 50-minute instructional period. By teaching these skills, you can make up for all or most of the lost instructional time.
3. BUILD A BOND
Especially if you work with students who are totally sour and negative towards teachers, you need to establish a positive and powerful presence from the first second of class. Here is a wonderful device that you can make…
