CAT Examination In A Nutshell

Anyone who has heard about CAT exams knows that they are a big deal for Indian students, but do you know what exactly this exam test is and what the big brain teaser is all about?

CAT stands for Common Admission Test, and is a computer-based MBA entrance test that is conducted across India. It is seen as a gateway to the most prestigious IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) and other B-schools such as the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad or the College of Management Studies in Delhi.

Needless to say, this makes CAT a very competitive exam. The benefits of graduating with an MBA from these schools are believed to be phenomenal, so every year hundreds of thousands of ambitious Indian graduates, post-graduates and professionals rush to apply.

The CAT is conducted every year during a 21-day testing period in October and November. The results are published in January.

To qualify for the CAT, a candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum grade of 50% or the equivalent, calculated based on the practice followed by the university from which the degree was obtained.

The exam itself consists of three sections: Quantitative Aptitude (Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Business Mathematics), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability (Reading Comprehension, Verbal Logic, Vocabulary and Grammar Correction).

For each section, a candidate reads the questions on a computer terminal and chooses the answers by clicking on the correct option. You will have seventy minutes to answer thirty questions within each section of the test, while the countdown time is shown on your screen.

Generally speaking, each correct answer will earn you four marks, each incorrect answer will result in a negative mark and unanswered questions will be left unmarked. For each section, a candidate must secure the minimum marks to qualify for that section and eventually the CAT. To get calls for group discussions and personal interviews by IIMs, candidates need to secure both the sectional and overall test cut-offs.

A candidate can choose the test location during registration, but cannot choose their workstation. A candidate is not allowed to take the test more than once a year. You can reschedule the exam, but you cannot cancel it.

The task of conducting the CAT exam is given to a different IIM every year based on the rotation policy, while the administration of Computer Based Tests (CBT) has been entrusted to the US firm Prometric test administration.
