Effective Goals – Goal Setting Strategies That Work

Still trying to figure out what went wrong in 2007? Where did you mess up? If you are one of the multitudes of people who have given up on setting goals, I have a suggestion for you. Look back at your life and list all the things you’ve accomplished without a goal.

To achieve your destination, you must have some kind of road map.

This simple fact catches more people unaware than almost any other fact in life. In those early years, our destination is “the end of the year,” or “summer camp,” or “family vacation,” and then there’s graduation, college, or career goals. Some goals require a strategic life plan, others do not. But we all need goals of some kind, even if it’s just to get through another day on planet earth.

Recently, I was asked to do a hit for a Sunday school teacher in a class of young adults. The vast majority of students were in college, and I was surprised to learn that few of them realized that education, college degrees, and having a job after college were actually “goals” they were achieving. When I told them that they could determine how successful they were at their goals, they all became quite interested in the concept.

Prepare a life goal that you have thought about and think you can achieve. This goal can be as miraculous as you wish, but it should be beyond your lifetime capabilities to achieve. One man stated his life goal as “A goal that I am continually striving to realize that I cannot complete this goal as it requires my life and more to achieve it.” A lifelong goal is one toward which you are continually moving.

The rest of your goals will follow a different set of constraints. If you are not used to setting goals. I would suggest you start with these first.

1. Set realistic goals.

Don’t set the bar so high that you can’t reach it. If you’re failing your math class because your grades for the first half of the year were so poor, you probably won’t get an A for the class, but your upcoming assignments and tests might be A’s and you might even be able to ask- to your teacher if you can retake a test, or if you can take some extra credit to get a higher grade. Maybe you could set a goal for three levels higher than what you are currently doing?

2. Write down your goals.

Put your goals in writing. Nothing makes a goal more powerful than writing it down. Once you have printed the goal, post it on your computer and read your goals at least two or three times a day. Make sure that as you read these goals you visualize yourself achieving them.

3. Actively pursue achievement.

Include your goal in your daily agenda. Once you’ve set a goal, write it down, add it to your schedule, and make time for the activities necessary to reach your goals. Baby steps work. Just make sure you take the necessary steps every day to reach your goals. Do something every day to achieve the goals you set for yourself. Make them part of your daily habits and do them automatically.

These are actions that will help you achieve your personal goals for 2008. Have you written them down yet? This is the perfect time to do it.
