ASVAB Score – What it Takes to Get You in the Military
Your ASVAB score serves as your ticket to the military. A bad ASVAB score can spell the end of your dreams of joining the world’s most elite military force. Therefore, it is extremely important to be familiar with the components that determine your admission.
The nine different subjects covered by the ASVAB subtests are General Science (GS), Arithmetic Reasoning (RA), Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Mathematical Knowledge (MK), Electronic Information (EI) , Mechanical understanding. (MC), Auto and Shop Information (AS) and Assembling Objects (AO). Since the ASVAB is not classified as a test or assessment of a person’s IQ, your ASVAB test score does not determine how intelligent you are, but instead determines your fitness for the military.
The most important and crucial part of your ASVAB test score is your scores on four subtests namely Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mathematical Knowledge (MK) . These four scores will contribute to your Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) which indicates whether or not you should be accepted into the military. Your scores on other subtests will serve as bonus points that will also be used to identify your specific position in the military.
Different military organizations have different requirements regarding the minimum ASVAB or AFQT test score required for an applicant to be admitted to military service. The requirements also differ based on whether the applicant is a high school graduate or a GED holder. For high school diploma holders, the minimum required AFQT test score is 36 for the US Air Force, 31 for the Army, 40 for the Coast Guard, 32 for the Marine Corps, and 31 for the Navy. If you hold a GED, the minimum AFQT test score you must achieve is 65 for the US Air Force, 31 for the Army, 50 for the Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and marine However, there are rare special circumstances.
