CNC Machinist – CNC Operator
A CNC machinist also known as a CNC operator is the individual who is capable of running the CNC machine. They are involved in understanding the process of their type of machining and are able to look at blueprints of the drawings of the parts to be created and set up the machine to produce the part.
A CNC mechanic must understand various software programs, including CAD and CAM, and understand the intricacies of the CNC machine they are tasked with operating. Depending on the industry the individual operator works in, they may have knowledge of milling, cutting, drilling and other types of machining.
There are several skills that a CNC mechanic must have, including:
– They must be a problem solver to be able to troubleshoot the machine if something goes wrong.
– They must understand a CNC machine they are working on and know its capabilities and limitations.
– They need to understand the CNC process and how it works in general with the type of machining they need to produce.
– They must be able to identify and use several codes.
– They must be able to identify, locate and use various tools that may need to be loaded into their machine.
– They must also have mechanical skills to work with a variety of machines.
Some CNC machinists are also able to program machines, but the job might require a separate person to do the programming. If they are programmers, they would also understand how to organize and plan, be able to read blueprints and have good math skills.
Another type of CNC machinist does both operation and programming. This person may have a background in tool making and dyeing or mold making or may be a general machinist. In this case they would have extensive training in programming with CNC and machining and planning; the other requirement is that they would have done an apprenticeship to learn these skills which would have lasted three to four years, which means that part of their training would have been on the job.
As CNC operators continue to work with CNC machines, they must continually maintain their skills by retraining so that they can edit CNC programs when necessary. Typically, the shop they work in will update software from time to time or update machinery and they will need to be able to process information from these updates.
Most CNC machinists have some education, but it’s usually a certificate or apprenticeship program. Since it is a trade, they can gain on-the-job experience in some situations. This could be through an apprenticeship or through an entry-level position in a company.
Because a CNC mechanic is capable of doing so many things, he is generally well compensated. The average salary for a generalizing CNC mechanic is $14.37 to $23.08 an hour. An inexperienced CNC machinist will earn less than one with a lot of experience.
