Is Mandarin Chinese Really a "Hard" Language? Tips to Learn It Automatically
I’ve heard many people say the same thing: Chinese is so hard.
But first, let’s define what “hard” is.
We would say “this math question is hard”, “running a marathon is hard” or “losing 20 kg is hard”.
I mean, intellectually if we can’t solve a problem, I agree that “it’s hard”, because it’s out of our control.
But is losing some weight really “hard” or is Chinese really that “hard”?
Think about it, there are 1.3 billion Chinese in China and almost all of them speak excellent Mandarin Chinese.
Can they all be geniuses? Definitely not!
The same applies to Chinese people who learn a foreign language, such as English, most of them dream of speaking English fluently as well and think that “this is difficult”. It all comes down to using the right method to learn a language, and if you have your first language (meaning you have the ability to learn a language), you can learn and speak another language fluently.
So what is the correct method?
Let me ask you a question: who do you think are the BEST language learners?
Do you think they should be scientists? Doctors? Sportsmen?
In fact, they are what we have all been through.
You are probably wondering: this is impossible, adults know how to form sentences more articulately, we know more words and we know how to use the dictionary to help us learn a foreign language. But when you think about it again, when we were children, we learned a lot in our mother tongue. These things include pronunciation, grammar, intonations, tones (if your language has them), etc. And the funniest thing is that they learned them automatically, without any “study”!
On the other hand, if you want to “memorize” these things and use them fluently in everyday conversation, I can tell you that the chance is almost ZERO.
Here is the reason.
When we speak, most of the processes are unconscious, including how to do it from correct grammar, muscle coordination, intonation, etc. It is impossible to undergo all these processes in a quick conversation, the more you “think”, the less fluent and confident you will be. So the key is to build unconscious fluency… and you need the most efficient and effective way to achieve that. Most people just give up before they get to this point…and say “this language is hard”.
So what is the best approach to increase your unconscious fluency automatically?
One word: LISTEN.
Yes, it’s that simple.
When we were still children, we didn’t analyze a language, we didn’t study a grammar book, we didn’t go to school to “learn a language”. We simply listened to our parents and people around us talking to us, and picked up the language unconsciously and automatically, without any effort to “memorize”. The things you have collected in these years can be written in a language book of more than 300 pages, but the brain is so amazing and sophisticated enough to collect this massive information unconsciously.
Dr. Paul Pimsleur, a scholar and authority on applied linguist, has found that using the ears to learn a language is the best approach.
In his audio-based language learning system, he emphasized the importance of “organic learning” to help automatically “lock” language into our brains, which is the way we used it in our childhood to learn languages. Neither analyze, nor interpret, nor understand, just LISTEN. By obeying this rule, your success in speaking Mandarin Chinese (or any other foreign language) is almost 100% guaranteed, if you are willing to put in the time and effort. You can learn AT LEAST 3x faster than the average Mandarin learner, plus this method is much less painful.
So from now on, put on your headphones to listen to Chinese materials that you can understand, repeat them over and over again to embed the Chinese in your head.
My recommendation is to listen to at least 45 minutes of these materials, stick to some of them, learn the words and phrases deeply. Check your progress after 4 weeks, practice talking about the topics you heard over and over with your Chinese friend or some Chinese learners. You’ll likely feel much more confident talking about these topics, and the words will just flow out of your mouth automatically, without thinking or translating!
So from now on, remember the rule of thumb: LISTEN. Use your ears to learn Chinese and improve your speaking automatically and effortlessly. And stop saying Chinese is “difficult”, no language is “difficult” in this world, anyone can achieve fluency using the right method and approach.
