## Why Study Math? – Bruce Lee Would Be Proud

It is interesting as a fighting technique using the nunchaku weapon, the octagonal oak sticks connected by a short chain or rope, which were immortalized by Bruce Lee in his famous martial arts film, “Enter the Dragon” , and mathematics, especially parametric equations. –could be so well intertwined. It’s as if mathematics has no favoritism in rearing its head in all sorts of seemingly unrelated fields. Read on and you will see how nunchaku and mathematics are so closely related.

In a previous article titled, “Why study mathematics? – Parametric equations”, I discussed how these nifty equations can describe some exotic curves that, using only the xi and y variables, could not be so easily expressed. So we talked about the cycloid and as easily described by the two parametric equations x = a(t – sint) iy = a (1 – cost). If you try to remove the parameter and express this curve in terms of xiy only, I think you will find it an insurmountable task. I tried and quickly found myself mired in deep quicksand. Better to stick to parametric equations.

Now how would parametric equations and math keep up with Bruce Lee and the art of nunchakudo? Well, first of all, as a master of martial arts and particularly the art of using nunchuks, which is called nunchakudo, Bruce Lee could produce beautiful katas, or forms, using nunchuks as a weapon. When performing these katas, Lee, or any skilled nunchakudoka (martial artist who is proficient with nunchuks), would wave these curious sticks in wave and swirl patterns that are described by beautiful mathematical curves called Lissajouswith the homonymous name of the French mathematician who studied them in detail.

The Lissajous are given parametrically by x = A[sin(at) + d]y = B[sin(bt)]. The curves range from simple lateral figure eights, such as when A = 1, B = 2 id = pi/2 (pi is approximately 3.14), to intricate opposite boomerang figures. Now relating these curves to nunchakudo, it turns out that when practicing with these sticks, the expert will rotate them in patterns that trace the various Lissajous curves. As the practitioner becomes more and more adept, they can draw more complex Lissajous curves and do so with poise, artistry, and poise. Now how’s that for a real-life example of where math comes into play in the world!

The next time you watch a martial arts movie like “Enter the Dragon” and see nunchuks swinging gracefully, remember that there is a set of parametric equations that describe this beautiful movement and the elegant display of chuks. In fact, Bruce Lee would be proud to know that someone understands his art in this way.
