5 Ideas for Making Extra Money to Reduce College Graduate Debt
Going through all of my advice that I’ve given so far, I haven’t really covered how to make money, beyond the basic “get a job” quote. Getting a job is a great thing, don’t get me wrong, but while you’re in school most of your time should be going to class, studying, or enjoying some of the great benefits of going to college like new . friends and new experiences. The following ideas I will give are not ideas to live by and some will not be feasible for all people, but I will cover what I have done to try and make some extra money here and there.
1. Sell on eBay
One of my favorite things to do is sell my old stuff and thrift store stuff on eBay. I actually started right in high school when I was 18 and have continued to this day. Over the past 2 months, I’ve made about $250 in profit selling old and new clothes, as well as cell phones and shoes I never wore. The only thing I will say is don’t jump into these get-rich-quick ideas or have a full-time business. Most people who do this full time, have a huge amount of inventory, employees, storage buildings or even storefronts. What I will tell you to focus on is finding something that interests you, such as antiques, children’s clothing (both used and new), or something like auto parts.
Look around your house/apartment/room and find items you no longer use. Most people have old toys, old video games, or old clothes that they keep that they don’t need, I actually had a pair of old Chuck Taylors that I wore about 3 times and never wore again. But to learn how to sell on eBay you have to try, you can’t just read an article and suddenly know what people will want. Find your little niche and be an expert in it and try to find products that match that niche at a good price. The biggest mistake people make is buying an item that they think is amazing and they think they are getting it at a great price and then find out that people are already selling it for 100 less than what you actually bought that item for . It’s not easy, but eBay can work if you do the research, put in the effort, and find a niche. You won’t get rich, but if you make an extra $50-$200 a month, that equates to about $600-$2,400 a year. A tiny little bonus to your college debt.
2. Secondary work
I know this is a broad category, but I’ll break it down a bit in terms of who you should ask when looking for side jobs. I define side jobs as small 1-2 day jobs where you usually work for family, friends’ parents, or even co-workers or teachers. I will always say that the more people you know, the more likely you are to find some kind of job, whether it’s a career or just a small side job. For me, I always went straight to my dad for something I needed done around the house or yard. My dad is now 71 and still works in his garden all the time and still has a small part time job that he still does but needs help with some of the bigger stuff. Whenever he needs to trim a tree, or any type of stump or branch removal that falls during the winter months, he lets me do it. For 2-4 hours of work, I would make $20-40 and was happy to help my family in the process. I always say that mowing a few yards during the summer and fall is a great way to get a little extra done here and there. Go to your parent’s neighborhood and your neighborhood and ask around, even ask your grandparents or parents if they would like a little extra help every now and then. One thing I learned while managing a gym is that everyone needs a babysitter or childcare service. The girls who worked in the playroom always had offers from the members to look after their children from time to time. Parents wanted a night out or had an event for their work that they had to go to. All these little things add up, again they may seem like obvious choices and won’t make you thousands of dollars, but until you put them into practice you may be losing a few hundred or even $1,000 a year. that you could have been using to pay off the debt.
3. Coaching in Sports Camps
I know this one might make people question what I’m saying a bit, but again I’m offering advice based on what I did. Instead of looking at it like you have to do this, maybe look at it as tutoring younger math students and that might work for you. One thing that always happened in my hometown was sports camps, whether it was baseball, basketball, soccer or even tennis, someone had a camp. guess what They were also during the summer and winter months when I wasn’t in school! If you find an old coach or training center that is setting up a sports camp, go visit them and see if they need any extra help. They usually last a week or more, most of the time your meals are paid for, and not only that if you are interested in coaching, you might be able to keep in touch with some coaches to try and get a job. later. The first places I always looked for help were major colleges or universities and then I went to local sports facilities and teams to try and find flyers and brochures with contact information and who was in charge. Call them and see if they need help, they may say no, or they may happily take an extra person, you never know until you ask.
4. Make a product and sell it
This will require some money to invest in your product, but it can generate huge returns in the future. I used to try making ebooks and sell them on eBay or other affiliate websites. Obviously I wasn’t very successful, but I didn’t have to invest money up front and if I failed (which I did) I didn’t lose a ton of money. My sister has become something of a candle guru, making them at home and selling them on eBay, as well as at garage sales, to friends and family, and even at her booth at a flea market. fleas But what you have to remember is that at some point in your life you probably enjoyed doing something. Try it again, see if you can improve it, and try to see if people are interested in buying it. Arts and crafts ideas can be great for places like Craigslist or flea markets, they could turn into something you could do full time later.
5. Create a blog or website
I’m not a good person to look them up, but I’ve researched and researched on different people who make $10-$5000 a month from their online ventures. Some have created an amazing blog like ViperChill.com and some have created an amazing product. I have officially made $7.00 in my lifetime trying to make different websites that never seem to take off because I usually get tired of waiting for results. Now I decided to make this one because I was tired of sitting and hearing all the different stories of so many people with so much college debt. This was the process I followed to create my website:
-Create a web domain name at GoDaddy.com.
-Purchased a year of hosting from HostGator.com
-Started writing blog posts about what I felt were important topics to myself, as well as what could help other people.
-He did it live by posting all my articles on my blog and trying to create a group of information that doesn’t go out of style but also helps a lot of people.
If you want help with eBay, creating a blog, or any of the articles mentioned above, please email me, comment below, or request a more detailed article to be written. I’m all for helping!!!
