The real purpose of education should be to encourage students to adopt and show progress in the traits in which they feel most comfortable, rather than forcing them to study a subject that seems less attractive or uninteresting. If a student develops a natural affinity towards any particular subject, it is obvious that he will do well in future if he pursues that same subject for further studies. Keeping this general trend of behavior in mind, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with a progressive and dynamic approach in the real sense. The need to reform the structure of exams
As we all know, after the CBSE 10th level board exams, the subject layout becomes precise and students have the option to opt for a stream that suits them best. So from 11th standard students can choose between science, humanities or business commerce. The motto is to serve the basic knowledge of each subject to each student up to standard 10, after which specialization in a specific field of study would be available.
Now, the reform that CBSE has come up with is based on the fact that not all students have similar levels of interest in difficult subjects like Maths and that’s why setting a similar level of difficulty in Maths in the 10th exams even to those that have no intentions. to advance the subject is a bit unfair to them. Data shows that many students suffer low aggregate in their 10th board exams due to their poor scores in maths. Therefore, students who are not willing to study mathematics as a major subject in high school should ideally be exempted from the difficulty of difficult mathematics questions. Judging all students on the same scale does not properly account for their unique abilities and reflection becomes misleading.
The new and revived framework
The CBSE Board has declared that there would be two separate question papers for the 10th Mathematics board exam. One of them would be ‘Mathematics-Standard’ which requires more aptitude in the subject, while the other would be ‘Mathematics-Basic’ which would be comparatively easier and justify basic competences in mathematics. It should be noted that while there would be visible changes in the structure of the question paper in Maths boards, the syllabus would remain the same throughout the academic session for all. Class assessments would also remain unchanged and there would be no separate provision for aptitude-based questions till the previous boards.
Students would be fully responsible for choosing the level/type of mathematics questions they would prefer to take for the final board examination, taking into account the syllabus and internal assessments. The standard level will be aimed at those who want to take mathematics for further studies, while the basic level will be for those who fear the subject and do not intend to take mathematics in their high school classes. The reforms will be applicable from the next academic year, which means students appearing for the 10th board exams in 2020 will have the option to opt between the two levels of mathematics based on their interests.

The methodology involved in CBSE has always been considered as the most relevant and scientific. The board’s student-friendly approach has always been its forte and has encouraged students to delve deeper into the subjects. It is hoped that this decision to segregate the assessment process will help relieve the students of any stress of dealing with the subject which might not be useful to them in their further studies. It’s always worth investing time and energy into something that will pay off in the future rather than beating around the bush. Hence, this decision to stratify the examination process based on academic need is certainly a laudable step taken by the CBSE board, ensuring students an effective and result-oriented education system.
