AC Solar Panels Make Solar Brain Dead Simple

As with all electronics over time, we get more for less in smaller and smaller packages. Many of the same rules for electronic components apply to solar power, since most of a solar PV system is electronic.
Traditionally designed solar electric photovoltaic systems use arrays of solar modules connected in series to combine the low power of each panel and aggregate a large flow of direct current (DC) energy which is then sent to a central inverter, which converts all the DC power from solar panels into alternating current (AC) power, the kind we use in our homes and offices.
Inverters are nothing but electronics, and solar component companies are gaining the same economies of scale we see in computers. Several inverter manufacturers have released what is known as a microinverter, an inverter that works with a single panel, rather than a large chain of panels connected together in an array.
At this point you have solar modules and micro inverters such as the Enphase M190, M210, M215 or D380. The next logical step would be to combine them into a single component, and thus the AC solar panel was born. And with AC solar panels comes the simplicity of buying panels as needed and hooking them up.
AC panels, or DC panels and micro inverters have several advantages over conventionally designed solar PV systems. For one thing, a lot less math is required, now that you don’t have to size the module strings in the electrical part inside the inverter. Yes, it hurt just reading it. What it means is that solar power has gone from something an engineer has to design to something the average do-it-yourselfer can do in a weekend at home.
Another big advantage has to do with shading. Right now, if a couple of modules in an array are in the shade, or if there are parts of more than a couple of panels in the shade, the array doesn’t generate enough electricity to drive the inverter, and to so NO electricity is being created by the solar, even though most of the array is in the sun. With AC solar panels with their own built-in microinverter, if the panel is in the sun, it is generating electricity, even if the panels on either side are in the shade. Over time, this can significantly increase the electricity yield of your solar power system.
AC solar panels are simply the next logical step in solar power systems. Today you get the same advantage by combining DC solar modules with micro inverters.
