Teaching ESL with Playing Cards

The standard pack of 52 cards is believed to have been invented in Persia. The back design usually looks like a Persian rug.

Many English speakers don’t realize that a club was a soldier’s symbol for war. Represents the use of the club (bonk! bonk!). The spade or spade is a symbol of the farmer, the economic foundation of feudal society (Reproduces digging. A shovel is a sap-jil in Korean). The heart symbolizes romance or love and the diamonds symbolize wealth or trade.

Some (very few parents or heads) object to using cards in class, but I always defend this position saying “We don’t gamble and we don’t play poker. We use cards to motivate children and help them learn English”. After that I had no problems.

I present the letters asking:

How many are there? (52 or 13 x 4)

how many colors (2)

How many types or sets (4)

First class:

In the first class I’ll just throw out random cards and the kids call out the type. This is enough of a challenge for beginners. Korean children tend to drop the s at the end of words and pronounce it in their Konglish saying heart-uh, spade-uh, di-a-mond, club-uh. So the first game or class is very much about re-teaching pronunciation (hard voice training).

Teach them to say diamonds, hearts, clubs and spades correctly. I don’t enter the word dress. Types or sets are sufficient for ESL students.

Then teach that the cards form a pack or deck. You can also tell them that a pack is like a pack or a pack of wolves. Talk to them about shuffling or shuffling (be-bim in Korean) the cards.

Finally, have the children call the Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen and King. This is easy. Jack is a royal servant. The ace is generally not known. Most kids call it A. Teach them a driving ace, shooting ace, golfing ace, etc. Royal in Korean roughly translates to yang-ban.

First game:

The first real game I play with kids is SNAP, where a kid has to say “snap” and hit their hand with the cards as I deal them in a pile.

They love the exciting anticipation of this game. To get started just play the game and don’t explain the rules. When the teacher calls out SNAP and slams his hand down on the first pair of cards, the kids are quickly hooked.

This game is best played around a small table with the children standing. They will fight for space. If they speak Korean, I kick them out for a round of cards. They find this funny.

Sometimes I get kicked out for speaking Korean. They find it even more fun!

Second game:

Sometimes we play the game Go Fish with regular cards. It involves a short dialogue like this: “Do you have an ace? No, go fishing.” If readers are not familiar with the Go Fish game, do an Internet search or ask another teacher. It is very useful.

Older children:

I play poker or 21 (Blackjack) with older kids/adults, but we use my token coins and they come back to me at the end of the class (so not playing). Children learn: bet, cheat, cheat, trick, lamppost, the kitty, close, fold or out, hit me, break, I’m out, I’m the winner. This is all common English, as are many sports terms, and children need it to fully understand the language.

Flashcards are a wonderful way to motivate students and teach English. They don’t even think of it as classwork. The fascination with card games is that they involve mental math, chance, skill, social interaction, and sometimes tricking or deceiving. They combine these things and have the appeal of interactive computer games. The little kids are shocked and surprised that the teacher cheats sometimes. Hee hee, :o). You will be surprised at their indignation.
