How to Teach Your Pre-Schooler to Write

As a mother of two, I was thrilled when my firstborn started scribbling at one and a half years old. He was a happy boy at his prep school, loved to read and write, and never caused any trouble to his teachers. But that was not the case with my little one. He never showed any interest in that pen or pencil that was there, he found a variety of other things that interested him, and when he went to that prep class, I almost gave up hope of ever seeing him hold a pencil or colored pencil. Well, that’s what helped me get him to write, with a little help from his school, of course.

Identify the problem

Five-year-olds may not have developed fine motor skills. Indications are that a child refuses to hold a pencil for a long time, or complains of pain while holding a pencil, or is afraid of pencils, crayons, and paper.

Although reading and writing are taught in parallel at school, some children prefer to read more, see more. There’s nothing wrong with that, and if they take time to ponder their phonetics, just let them be. Writing is a higher order skill, and it’s just waiting to happen. Give the child more input such as colorful story books, board games and word games. Reading proficiency will prepare them for writing. Soon they will start copying the words perfectly!

Some children are not ready to write. And suddenly they start writing really well after a few months. Ideally, writing in school starts at age six. So don’t panic if your child is only interested in looking at pictures in a book. As long as he is able to use a spoon to feed himself, string beads, or play with mud, he will be fine.

Some children are restless and cannot sit still for even a couple of minutes. Writing is not the only problem for these children. Even listening to a story can be a problem in class. In these cases, early detection is very helpful. Talk to your teachers and rule out any ADD/ADHD issues. These children will either be very active or become the classic dreamers of their activity sessions. Hyperactivity goes away with age, inattention doesn’t. All young children have a shorter attention span compared to adults. However, a preschool setting always helps the teacher to identify children who have learning difficulties. Identifying the problem helps us to intervene at this early stage and you will thank yourself when the children go to a normal school.

How to deal with reluctant writers

Homeopathy helps children a lot. Whether due to lack of fine motor grip, hyperactivity or lack of attention, the sooner the better. Other than that, I have found that the following steps have really helped my son improve his writing.

1. Improve hand-eye coordination – Encourage the child to play with a bat and a ball. Bring beads of various colors and ask him to thread his favorite colors first!

2. Give your fingers exercise – Take out this stress ball and let him squeeze it as many times as he can. Also encourage him to give a firm handshake. Ask him to help you dry your clothes by fixing them with clips. Make this a fun activity.

3. Get started with ease – First markers and sketches, then comes the pencil. Let him scribble or draw circles. Pretending to write is a fun time for them and the first step to writing.

4. Draw and write – Ask him to draw people. And, of course, you have to write their names. This is very funny. Drawing himself, his siblings, mummy and daddy and writing all their names (don’t worry about the spelling, or if he writes all sizes of letters, just praise him and he’ll be happy)

5. Rewards and prizes – Buy car stickers, stars or whatever you like. Give him a sticker on his wrist, the back of his hand or his cheek. Let him show it to dad or a friend. More writing, more fun stickers.

6. Greeting cards, thank you cards and shopping lists – Birthdays are a great occasion to bond with family. Help the child make a personalized greeting card with a short and cute message. How about writing a little “thank you” card to your friend for that lovely Christmas gift? You could also start writing your to-do list or shopping list and have the child write their own shopping list on a post it, and leave it on the fridge! Initially it will ask you for spelling, but within a few days, it will write down a very long list of things it needs!

The school framework

Preparatory school plays an important role in instilling a thirst for learning. This puts your child on the path to lifelong learning. Parents at this stage worry about whether their child has made enough friends, is doing well in school, etc. As long as the child shows a positive interest in school, is willing to attend school every day and comes home looking happy (sometimes they may have a bad day, just like us) there is no need to worry, if the child does not write as much as he should.

Any changes in this behavior, such as trying to avoid school, crying at night, looking unhappy whenever his school is mentioned are signs of trouble. It could be that he is being bullied or there has been a change of teachers. His favorite teacher must have gone on leave or someone disturbed him by playing. Since their world is really very small, these things really bother them and they may end up hating their books and pencils, without ever telling you the reason for their behavior. So having a good relationship with the school is very important.

Other fun ways to deal with reluctant writers

Another fun way to get kids involved is ‘finger writing’. This is like fingerprinting, but the child puts their fingers (especially the index finger) in some paint or even some chocolate and starts writing on various surfaces. Some children are very imaginative and will love to write in the air! Or on a brother’s back. Get innovative and associate writing with fun. And the results will be there to see. Never get upset if the child is not ready to write for days or even weeks. Praise others in the family, such as how Dad has such an important job and how he could get there. Such talk works to challenge the reluctant writer.

So happy parents!
