Homeschool – How to Give Your Kids a Proper Education

As a homeschooling parent, I want to give my children the best education I can. But what is a good education?

Well is a subjective word, so I can tell you what I think constitutes a good education. I think in terms of results.

What do I want my children to get out of their education?

I want my children to love learning. I want my children to develop satisfaction in becoming “experts” on subjects that interest them. I want my kids to wake up wondering what they learned that day. I want my child to research or ask me for help on how to spell a word because they are writing a story. I want my daughter to ask me how to solve an algebra problem because she is studying bacteria. They must be able to read newspapers and make sense of them. They should be able to separate the chaff from the wheat when doing almost anything. My children should understand how their community and country works and have an idea of what is happening in the world. My children should be able to adapt to new technologies and changes in the social, political and physical climate. I want my children to be good contributing members of society.

What kind of education will this achieve?

I am convinced that worksheets, school bells and long hours at school are not the way to foster a love of learning in children.

Play is important for learning. A book called Einstein never used Flashcards talks about how playtime makes young children happy and children “catch up” with their second grade peers, even if they haven’t been to ballet lessons, swimming lessons, piano lessons and a rigid preschool curriculum.

A note in the journal Science of January 20, 2009 The report calls for a fresh look at what happens outside of school reports how important it is to learn science in informal settings and that we learn science in many different settings. Schools are burdened with a lot of requirements for teaching, and the love of learning may not withstand the bureaucracy of the school.

An article in the February/March 2009 issue of American scientific mind he called The dire need to play notes that “free and imaginative play is crucial for normal social, emotional and cognitive development. It makes us fitter, smarter and less stressed.”

I have read many other books and articles on how best to foster a love of learning in children and have developed my homeschooling program for my children based on this.

the minimum

Children have a minimum amount of “work” they need to do each job. They have to practice the piano every day, but I agree that they only practice for five minutes. They must read every day. I don’t track my daughter’s reading, because she reads all the time. My son is not quite a bookworm yet, so I sit down with him and have him read for fifteen minutes or so each day. My son has to write a sentence every day and my daughter has to write a paragraph every day. They must also do some kind of physical activity every day. Both kids have to do some kind of math every day, even if it’s playing Monopoly with dad or keeping score for a game of Scrabble.

Besides the bare minimum, I have some goals set for them. My daughter has to give me at least one book report a month. My son has some goals set for learning to write.

All these activities are your responsibility. If they do their minimum, they can play, or whatever.

Documentaries

If my kids want to watch a History Channel, NOVA, or Discovery documentary, I let them. I watch the shows with the kids so I can answer any questions they might have, but if my 7 year old wants to watch a documentary about string theory, he can watch it. Children pick up an amazing amount of information and understand much more than I expected.

The library

We go to the library a lot. If the kids want to play with the plastic jungle animals, I let them. If they want to look at how long a ladybug lives, I’ll let them.

Field trips

If the kids ask to go to the science museum, I schedule it and take them. My husband and I take them to plays that seem appropriate. Basically, if kids show a continuing interest in a subject, if it’s reasonably within our means, we’ll try to help them get what they need to make sense of it.

My husband and I

My husband and I love to learn and we show it to the kids. They see us read regularly. They see that we get excited when we learn new things. My kids can see that we are close to obsessing when we get into something new.

It works?

So far, it has. My children love to learn.
