## Babies Do Not Want to Learn to Read – Fact Or Myth?

When it comes to teaching babies to read there are three groups of people. First we have those who believe it is possible and support it. Then we have those who are totally against teaching babies to read, and finally we have a group of people who don’t even know it’s possible. Depending on which group you are in will determine your belief regarding the title of this article.

Let’s look back to the early 1960s to give us a better insight. In the early 1960s or before a physical therapist named Glenn Doman began working with children who had suffered brain injuries from accidents or birth. He and his team began to physically and intellectually stimulate these young children. They designed very specific programs for parents to do at home with their brain-injured children. This involved teaching them to read by using large flash cards and large font.

What happened next is nothing short of incredible. These brain-injured children were brought back for follow-up appointments and were able to read at earlier ages than the normal children. Some of the parents began to wonder what would happen if they used the same program on their good children.

It is reported that as more and more parents had babies, they noticed that their new baby is learning to read along with his brain-injured sibling. These parents and many others wanted a program to follow to use with their good children as well.

In 1964 Glenn Doman first published How to Teach Your Baby to Read. Since then, it has gone on to sell millions of copies worldwide. For more than half a century, parents around the world have been teaching their babies to read. Knowing that babies were learning to read almost by accident, just because an older sibling was learning to read, allows us to disprove the math that babies don’t want to learn to read. They want to learn to read and they do.

A recent study revealed that preschoolers were able to identify between 20 and 50 different brands. While this is scary to some people because they think marketers are trying to read to little kids now, it’s just more proof that babies and toddlers can and do learn to read. These companies market themselves in a loud, big and bold way. This is precisely the way Glenn Doman recommends for teaching babies to read. Now, if we do this on purpose, imagine what our young children can learn.
