ASVAB Study Tips – How to Get the Most Out of Your ASVAB Study Time
If you are considering a career with the United States Armed Services, you will need to take the military entrance exam called the ASVAB. While the ASVAB is not a difficult exam to pass, it will take adequate planning and study to achieve a competitive score for your desired branch and job, rate, or MOS. In this article I’ll show you how to get the most out of your ASVAB study time.
The ASVAB, or Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, is designed to test you on the various subjects you’ve learned throughout high school. This includes but is not limited to general science, math, vocabulary and reading comprehension.
Although the exam covers many different topics, if you know how to study and how to approach the time remaining between now and the exam, you will get the most out of your study time and score well enough to qualify- te for the job, rating, or MOS.
Focus on your weak points
There are so many topics in the exam that you can’t start studying them all at once. Instead, start by taking a practice test to identify areas you struggle with. Create a study plan that will focus on learning these specific subjects and topics.
Study without interruption
The worst thing you can do is study in an area that allows interruptions. If your mind is trying to absorb new information, each interruption will cause you to forget what you were working on and require you to start over after each break.
Find a study area where you can study quietly and continuously. This includes finding a nearby library, a quiet room, or even a quiet booth at a local coffee shop or restaurant. While this limits outside interruptions, you must also limit personal interruptions. This includes turning off your cell phone, pager, laptop, and any other means that allow people to contact you.
Give yourself a continuous study block
When you sit down to study, it usually takes some time for your mind to realize that now is the time to study. The first few minutes of study are usually spent getting into the right mindset. This probably requires reading the same paragraph more than once as your brain focuses.
So your goal is to minimize the “start” point compared to the amount of study time. Instead of studying for 15 minutes here and there, try to schedule study sessions of at least 30-45 minutes as this will get you into the right flow of things.
